San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants committed three errors during a pivotal two-run seventh inning rally as the Bakersfield Blaze recorded a 7-5 victory on Friday evening at Sam Lynn Ballpark. In the opener of a three-game series, the Giants jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on Jose Flores' second-inning grand slam before Bakersfield tied the game in the sixth and went ahead in the seventh. The loss snaps San Jose's three-game winning streak and drops their overall record to 62-49.
All five of San Jose's runs came on homers as Joel Weeks connected for a solo shot in addition to Flores' slam. Michael Sandoval (2-for-4) was the only Giants starter to finish with a multi-hit game. San Jose ended the night with just five hits while they didn't manage a baserunner after the sixth inning.
The Giants carried a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning as starter Oliver Odle had retired the last seven Blaze hitters that had come to the plate. Miguel Velazquez began the frame with a single before Chris McGuiness drew a walk. After Mike Bianucci popped out, Cody Podraza lined a double off the fence in left field to plate Velazquez bringing Bakersfield to within 5-3. Edwin Quirarte was then summoned from the bullpen and after issuing an intentional walk to Tommy Mendonca that loaded the bases, Doug Hogan ripped a two-run double into the left field corner tying the game at 5-5.
Quirarte did recover to induce Andres James to fly out to shallow left before David Paisano flied to center as runners were stranded at second and third.
Quirarte continued to pitch in the bottom of the seventh and after Erik Morrison led off with a single, Velazquez hit a sharp ground ball under the glove of the third baseman Weeks for an error. Wendell Fairley then mishandled the ball down the left field line for a second error as Morrison took third and Velazquez advanced to second. Quirarte recovered to set down McGuiness on a pop out before Bianucci hit a ground ball to third. The Giants infield was playing in as Weeks gloved the ball, but with Morrison racing toward the plate, the third baseman threw wildly home for another error as the go-ahead run scored.
Podraza was up next and he hit a ground ball to shortstop with Velazquez beating the throw home from Flores with the second run of the inning and a 7-5 Blaze lead.
Bakersfield's Corey Young struck out the side in a perfect top of the eighth before Fabio Castillo fanned two in a 1-2-3 ninth for the save. Reliever Justin Miller (3-3) earned the win after retiring the Giants in order in the seventh.
Quirarte (2-7) suffered the loss after surrendering two unearned runs on two hits over one inning.
The Giants took the early lead as Charlie Culberson walked with one out in the top of the second before Sandoval singled and Drew Biery walked to load the bases. Flores followed by driving the first pitch from Blaze starter Carlos Pimentel over the fence in right field for a grand slam. The home run, Flores' fourth of the year, gave San Jose a 4-0 lead.
Bakersfield scored twice in the bottom of the third as Morrison walked with two outs to snap a string of seven consecutive batters that Odle had retired. After Velazquez singled and a passed ball from catcher Johnny Monell advanced the runners to second and third, McGuiness lined a two-run single into center field.
Weeks gave the Giants a 5-2 lead with a home run to deep right center field leading off the top of the fifth.
Odle received a no-decision after working 5 1/3 innings with five runs (four earned) and five hits allowed. He walked two and struck out four.
San Jose's last baserunner of the contest was Sandoval's two-out single in the top of the sixth inning.
