San Jose Giants News Release

STOCKTON - The Stockton Ports added to their league-best home run total with two more long balls in a 4-2 victory over the San Jose Giants on Friday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. Stockton hitters connected for a two-run homer in the second and a solo shot in the fifth while the Giants were held to just four hits offensively in the series-opening loss. The defeat dropped San Jose's overall record to 63-43.

Mac Williamson (2-for-3, 2B, SB) had two of the four Giants hits to lead the way at the plate.

San Francisco Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong started on the mound as part of a rehabilitation assignment and worked the first 2 2/3 innings with two runs allowed. Vogelsong's only hit surrendered was a two-run homer to Bruce Maxwell in the second inning that gave Stockton an early 2-0 lead. Vogelsong, who was saddled with the loss, issued one walk, hit one batter and struck out three during his 45-pitch outing.

In the bottom of the second, B.A. Vollmuth began the Ports rally by drawing a leadoff walk. Vogelsong struck out the next two batters, but then Maxwell belted a 2-2 pitch over the fence in right center for a two-run homer.

Stockton extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Bobby Crocker smacked a solo homer to right off of Ty Blach. The two home runs increased the Ports' season total to 144 - 26 more than the next-closest team in the California League.

Meanwhile, Stockton starting pitcher Michael Ynoa didn't allow a hit until the top of the sixth. San Jose's only baserunners over the first five innings were back-to-back one-out walks to Matt Duffy and Williamson in the first, Duffy getting hit by a pitch in the fourth and a two-out walk to Chris Lofton in the top of the fifth. Ynoa retired 16 out of the first 20 batters that he faced.

The Giants finally produced their first hit of the game when Williamson grounded a single into left with one out in the top of the sixth. New pitcher Seth Frankoff then struck out Ricky Oropesa before a walk to Ryan Cavan brought the potential tying run to the plate. However, Frankoff pitched out of the inning by inducing the next batter, Devin Harris, to fly out to center.

San Jose scored their first run of the night in the top of the seventh as Elliott Blair led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on Lofton's one-out single and scored when Brock Bond grounded out.

Stockton though got the run right back in the bottom of the inning as Myrio Richard singled with two outs and scored when the next batter, Josh Whitaker, doubled into the right field corner.

The Giants moved back to within two runs in the top of the eighth when Williamson led off with a double, advanced to third on Oropesa's groundout and came home when Cavan hit a sacrifice fly to right. San Jose, however, wouldn't manage another baserunner as Ports closer Ryan Dull retired Harris on a groundout to end the eighth before a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning to finish the game.

Ynoa (1-2) picked-up his first California League win after allowing just one hit over 5 1/3 scoreless innings. He walked three and struck out six. Dull pitched the last two innings with one run surrendered to earn his fifth save of the year.

Notes: The Giants have lost three out of four games to begin their road trip ... Stockton out-hit San Jose by an 8-4 margin ... Harris (0-for-4) saw his hitting streak end at 14 games ... Both teams were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position ... Blach, who entered the game to begin the bottom of the fourth, pitched five innings of long relief ... He allowed two runs (both earned) on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts ... It marked only his second relief appearance of the season (16 starts).

On Deck: The Giants and Ports continue their three-game series on Saturday evening with first pitch at Banner Island Ballpark scheduled for 7:05 PM. Kelvin Marte (3-2, 3.28 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Stockton is expected to counter with James Simmons (7-4, 4.52 ERA). The game can be heard live on sjgiants.com with coverage beginning at 6:35 PM.
