Bakersfield Blaze News Release
In a contest that featured a 57-minute, five-inning span, the Bakersfield Blaze turned in one of their finest all-around performances of the 2013 season and leveled the Lake Elsinore Storm, 10-0, in the middle game of a road set at Pete Lehr Field.
Jonathan Moscot (W, 2-14) got the start for the Blaze, and immediately became the story of the night. Moscot worked through the first three innings in just 24 pitches, and did not allow a hit until the 5th.
The Storm began to make Jon work one notch harder in the 5th inning, but that still proved minimally challenging for the Pepperdine product, who was on his game right from the outset.
Moscot ended the night going 8.0 innings, tied for the longest start by any Blaze starter all season, allowing just three hits while striking out six. Jonathan let just two Storm baserunners reach second base, and used just 91 pitches on his entire evening of work.
Jacob Johnson pitched a scoreless 9th for the Blaze to seal the shutout.
On the other side, James Needy (L, 6-4) matched Moscot for five innings, but his fortune ran out immediately thereafter. After Needy struck out the side in the 5th for his sixth strikeout of the game, the Blaze got even.
In the 6th, the first five consecutive Blaze reached base against Needy, driving the Storm starter from the game. In that span, Yovan Gonzalez and Juan Perez singled, and Junior Arias was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Juan Silva then slammed a two-run double to left, and Juan Silverio corkscrewed a two-run infield single up the middle to put the Blaze up, 4-0.
Ryan Quigley was summoned from the pen, and he had only slightly more success than did Needy. Steve Selsky walked, and Juan Duran followed with a majestic three-run homer to left, putting the exclamation point on a 7-run inning, more than enough for the Blaze on the night.
That inning continued an interesting stretch for Bakersfield. This season, the Blaze have plated 5 runs or more in an inning 10 times, and in those nine different games, the Blaze are 9-0.
For the Storm, Dan Cortes worked the 7th and 8th, and the Blaze collected a pair of additional runs, with Silva driving in his third of the night, and Selsky, his first. The Blaze got one more unearned tally in the 9th on a Selsky double and Storm fielding error, wrapping up the scoring.
The win for Bakersfield puts the team at 5-3 in the last 8 games, and turns the Sunday evening 5:05pm game into a rubber match. The Blaze will hand the ball to James Allen, who has already posted a 6.2-inning shutout in this ballpark this season. The Storm counter with righthander Justin Hancock.
Make sure to listen to every pitch of Blaze baseball action this year! Dan Besbris will have the call on Sunday online only via the TuneIn Radio app or Gameday audio link at BakersfieldBlaze.com. The Blaze pregame show begins at 5:00pm, with first pitch to follow.
