Stockton Ports News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Stockton Ports dropped their fifth straight contest to open a seven-game road trip on Thursday night at Municipal Stadium. Stockton mustered just one run as the Ports were shut down by Giants starter Jason Forjet (4-3) in a 4-1 loss to open a four-game series.
San Jose scored two of its four runs in the first inning. Jeff Kobernus reached on an infield single to open the frame and then went to third on an errant pick-off throw by Ports starter Matt Stalcup (1-2). Kobernus scored on an ensuing sac-fly by Christian Arroyo to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Angel Villalona hit a solo home run to left to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
Stalcup went on to have Skyler Stromsmoe reach on a fielding error by Matt Chapman in the second inning and then walked the ensuing batter. After the walk, Stalcup went on to retire the next 12 batters in a row taking him one out deep into the sixth. With one out in the sixth, Daniel Carbonel singled and went on to score on a two-out wild pitch by Stalcup to make it a 3-0 contest.
Stalcup suffered the loss, going six innings and allowing three runs on four hits while walking one and matching a career-high with eight strikeouts.
Forjet, meanwhile, was tough to figure for Ports batters. The best chance the Ports had was in the fifth inning when they got back-to-back singles from B.J. Boyd and Yairo Munoz to open the inning. Forjet was able to pitch around the jam and ended up earning the win after tossing seven shutout innings, allowing five singles while striking out seven.
Stockton's lone run of the night came in the eighth off Giants reliever Ian Gardeck. Coco Crisp walked to open the inning and went on to score on a two-out RBI single by Trent Gilbert to make it a 3-1 game. The Giants got the run right back in the bottom of the eighth off Ports reliever Trevor Bayless as Christian Arroyo doubled and scored on an ensuing RBI single by Carbonell to give the Giants a three-run cushion again at 4-1. It was the only run allowed by Bayless in two innings of relief.
Jake Smith (SV, 7) came on to pitch the ninth and gave up a one-out single to Branden Cogswell and a two-out single to Crisp to get the possible-tying run to the plate. Brett Vertigan, however, would ground out to the shortstop Arroyo to end the ballgame. Smith notched his seventh save of the season.
The Ports and Giants play the second game of their four-game set on Friday night at Municipal Stadium. Daniel Mengden (3-1, 4.94 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose right-hander Jake Dunning (0-0, 0.00 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
