Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports got just enough offense to complete a four-game sweep of the Bakersfield Blaze on Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Branden Cogswell hit a two-run triple to left to give the Ports a 3-1 lead and ultimately a win by that same final.

For the first time in the series it was the Ports who opened the scoring. With the bases loaded and one out in the third, Matt Chapman flew out to deep right to score Brett Vertigan and give Stockton a 1-0 lead. It was the lone run allowed by Blaze starter Eddie Campbell, who received a no-decision after going two-and-two-thirds innings and allowing three hits while striking out five.

Ports starter Dylan Covey retired the first nine batters he faced before issuing a walk to open the fourth. Covey would go on to issue two more walks in the fourth to load the bases with two outs, but induced a ground out to escape the jam.

After pitching a scoreless fifth, Covey came out to warm up for the sixth and suffered an injury that caused him to limp back to the dugout prior to the start of the inning. He received a no-decision, going five scoreless innings and allowing two hits while walking three and striking out three.

Lou Trivino took over for Covey in the sixth and issued a one-out walk to Burt Reynolds and then hit Austin Wilson. After a wild pitch advanced runners to second and third, Justin Seager grounded out to shortstop to drive in the lone Blaze run of the night and tie the game at 1-1. Trivino went an inning-and-a-third and allowed the one run without allowing a hit while walking three.

Carlos Misell took over for Campbell in the third and tossed 3.1 scoreless innings while allowing one hit. Rafael Pineda (2-2) took over in the seventh and after setting the side down in order in his first inning of work, gave up a pair of hits to put two aboard in the eighth. With two on and two out, Cogswell came up and hit a fly ball slicing towards the left field corner. Reynolds, the left fielder, reached up to make the catch at the wall and proceeded to crash into the fence, jarring the ball loose and allowing both baserunners to score to give the Ports a 3-1 lead.

Pineda suffered the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in three innings of work.

Corey Walter (1-2) took over to record the final out of the seventh inning and pitched a scoreless eighth as he went on to receive the victory. Brendan McCurry (SV, 19) set the side down in order in the ninth to notch his league-leading 19th save of the season.

Following a day off on Wednesday, the Ports travel to Lancaster to begin a four-game series with the JetHawks. In the series opener on Thursday, left-hander Chris Lamb (0-1, 11.57 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Lancaster right-hander Keegan Yuhl (2-0, 1.75 ERA). First pitch on Thursday is set for 6:30 p.m. PDT.
