Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The Bakersfield Blaze once again held the opposition at bay for most of a ballgame, but a mis-read led to two Stockton Ports runs in the bottom of the 8th, and the Blaze ended up swept in a four-game series in Stockton, dropping the finale 3-1 at Banner Island Ballpark.

Eddie Campbell got the start for the Blaze tonight, and rolled through the Ports lineup a first time, striking out five of the first nine batters he faced. But Campbell ran into trouble in the 3rd inning, issuing a pair of walks and a single to load the bases before a flyball plated the Ports first run of the night.

The Blaze went to the bullpen for Carlos Misell, who was tremendous, going 3.1 innings of scoreless relief while keeping the game within reach.

Meanwhile, Dylan Covey threw the ball well for the Ports, bouncing back from three straight rough starts to go five innings of scoreless baseball. Covey ultimately left the game due to injury before the start of the 6th.

Lou Trivino came on and struggled with his control, surrendering the tying run to the Blaze in the 6th on a walk, a hit batter, a wild pitch and a run-scoring groundout. The game moved to the 8th in a tie.

But the Ports pushed ahead late once again. With Rafael Pineda (L, 2-2) on the hill, Stockton hit for a bloop single, a line drive knock and with two outs, a flyball to left, misjudged by the Blaze outfield and played into a triple scored two and the Blaze fell behind 3-1.

For the Ports, Corey Walter (W, 1-2) worked the 8th for the win and Brendan McCurry got his Cal League-leading 19th save of the season with a nine-pitch 9th.

The lone RBI of the night belonged to Justin Seager, who scored Burt Reynolds on a grounder.

The Blaze now go into a day off before opening up a seven game homestand against the San Jose Giants and High Desert Mavericks.

The homestand begins with a SELL OUT Budweiser Throwback Thrirsty Thursday, as Keury Mella toes the rubber for the Giants and the Blaze counter with Scott DeCecco. First pitch at 7:45pm, gates open at 6:45pm, and fans can listen to the game online at BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio. Dan Besbris has the call.
