South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays scored two goals in the opening 80 seconds to cruise past the Columbia Inferno 8-3 in preseason action in front of a jam-packed Carolina Ice Palace consisting of Stingrays season ticket holders.
The Stingrays jumped ahead with two quick goals. Evan Schwabe cut in front from the left wing side and beat goaltender Mike Boudreau 55 seconds into the contest.
Just 25 seconds later, Ryan Bennett snapped a shot off the right wing circle to give South Carolina a 2-0 lead at the 1:20 mark of the opening stanza.
Later in the first, Columbia cut the lead in half on the power play, defenseman Mike Jarmuth wired a point shot through traffic and past netminder Davis Parley.
Stingrays captain Cail MacLean restored South Carolina's two-goal lead by depositing a Chris Chaput pass in front with the man advantage.
In the final minute of the first, Stingrays' Brendan Bernakevitch scooped up a loose puck in close and buried it to make it 4-1 for South Carolina through 20 minutes of action.
Jarmuth netted his second of the game on the power play.
Stingrays' Matt Reid countered with an unassisted shorthand breakaway goal at 10:07, but the Inferno's Chris Thompson responded 20 seconds later to bring South Carolina's lead to 5-3.
Late in middle stanza, Josh Anderson hustled up the left wing boards and ripped a slap shot over the right shoulder of Boudreau to give South Carolina a three-goal cushion after 40 minutes.
Stingrays went ahead 7-3 on Bennett's second of the contest with a quick release from the slot at 6:19 of the third.
However, immediately after the goal Thompson initiated with Bennett and Reid came into the fracas. Reid would be assessed a game misconduct for being the third-man into the melee, while Thompson and Bennett each received five minutes for fighting.
Anderson notched his second of the game to round out the scoring in the final minute of regulation.
South Carolina went 2-for-9 on the power play, while Columbia was 3-for-13 on the man advantage. The Stingrays outshot the Inferno 37-20.
Additional notes: Players that did not suit for the Stingrays were defensemen Tim Judy, T.J. McElroy, Jeffrey Moor and forwards Jarrett Konkle, Chris Kovalcik, Mark Prentice...Columbia players not in the line-up were goaltender Robert Gherson and forwards Mac Faulkner, Jeff Miles and Chris St. Jacques.
