Portland Beavers News Release

SALT LAKE CITY - Gary Johnson doubled, tripled and had two RBIs as part of Salt Lake's 14-hit attack in the Stingers' 10-6 victory over the Portland Beavers at Franklin Covey Field Monday night.

Adam Riggs scored three times and was one of five players with two hits in the game for the Stingers, who broke a five-game losing skid.

Salt Lake (12-7) took a three-run lead into the fifth and busted open the game with five runs in the inning for a 9-1 lead.

The Stingers went up 4-0 with a pair of runs in the first inning on a two-run double by former Beaver Alex Pelaez and two more in the third on Johnson's two-run triple to center.

The Beavers (8-11) cut into that when Jon Knott's RBI double scored Henri Stanley to make it 4-1 in the top of the third, but Salt Lake chased Portland starter Matt Bruback in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Joe Gerber, who had two RBIs, drove in Ben Petrick in the seventh and scored one of two unearned runs later in the inning, but the deficit proved too much as the Beavers' three-game winning streak came to a halt despite plating single runs in the eighth and ninth.

Chris Bootcheck (2-2) picked up the win, allowing three runs (2 earned) on six hits in 6.1 innings.

Bruback (0-3) got the loss in his third straight disappointing start. He matched a season-high by giving up six runs on eight hits before handing things over to the bullpen in the fifth.

Bruback hasn't gotten out of the fifth in any of his last three starts and is 0-3 with a 10.66 ERA in losses to Las Vegas, Tucson and Salt Lake in those appearances.

Knott doubled twice and led four Beavers with two hits in the game. Salt Lake out-hit the Beavers, 14-10.

Humberto Quintero hit his first Triple-A home run and just the sixth of his sixth of his eight-year professional career to lead off the ninth.

The series concludes Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. (Pacific).
