SALT LAKE CITY - Bobby Scales went 3-for-4 with a two-out RBI single in the ninth inning that tied the game and sent it to extra innings Tuesday afternoon, and the Portland Beavers rallied for three runs in the 11th for a 6-3 victory over the Salt Lake Stingers at Franklin Covey Field.

The Beavers (9-11) scored three runs with two outs in the 11th on consecutive run-scoring hits by Bernie Castro, Scales and Jon Knott to improve to 3-0 in extra innings and earn their first series victory of the season with their fourth win in five days.

It was the first time this season the Beavers won when their opponent scored first.

Castro and Knott joined Scales with three hits in the game to lead the Beavers, who open a four-game series at Edmonton on Thursday.

Rico Washington had a double, a walk and two runs scored, including the game-winner.

The Beavers trailed 3-1 going into the ninth, but two costly Salt Lake errors opened the door for a pair of unearned runs to tie the game.

Washington reached base to lead off the inning on an error by shortstop Alfredo Amezaga. Pinch-hitter Alex Fernandez singled as the next batter, with both players advancing an extra base on an error by right fielder Derrick Gibson. Washington scored on J.J. Furmaniak's sac fly to center and Fernandez scored the tying run on Scales' single to center with two outs.

Brian Specht led off the bottom of the ninth with a single off Beavers reliever Mike Bynum and advanced to third with two outs before Bynum got Gary Johnson to ground out to hold the tie.

After a scoreless 10th, Washington led off the 11th with a walk and came around to score the winning run on a two-out single by Castro. Scales added an RBI double and scored on Knott's single to left to complete the scoring.

When all was said and done, reliever Blaine Neal (2-1) emerged with the victory. Bart Miadich skirted trouble in the 11th for his fourth save-his first against his former team.

Yoshitaka Mizuo took the loss, allowing the 11th-inning damage.

Salt Lake (12-8) took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and third innings.

Washington's double in the fourth scored Ben Petrick, who tripled, to trim the deficit to 2-1, but the Stingers reclaimed their two-run advantage in the eighth when Johnson scored on a two-out double by Gibson.

The Beavers are off on Wednesday before beginning a four-game series at Edmonton on Thursday.
