Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Wil Nieves' single to left field scored the go-ahead run in the 11th inning and Julio Ramirez later added to the lead with a sacrifice fly to left as the Salt Lake Stingers defeated the Portland Beavers 5-3 in front of 13,789 at PGE Park Saturday night.

The win was the Stingers' eighth straight at PGE Park dating back to the 2002 season. The Beavers, meanwhile, have lost three straight since the all-star break and are 21-28 at home this season. At 49-52, the Beavers are three games below .500 for the first time this season.

Bart Miadich got in the win in relief for the Stingers (48-52) and Elio Serrano pocketed his second save. Matt Hampton was on the mound in the 11th and suffered his first loss of the season as a result.

Down 3-1 in the seventh, the Beavers rallied to the game on an RBI double by Donaldo Mendez and an RBI groundout by Bernie Castro.

Portland has yet to hold a lead in the current series with the Stingers.

Salt Lake wasted little time getting on the board. Portland starter Dennis Tankersley hit leadoff batter Alfredo Amezaga with an 0-2 pitch and Trent Durrington doubled to start the first inning. Robb Quinlan's groundout to second scored Amezaga with the game's first run. Tankersley struck out Gary Johnson and Barry Wesson to end the threat, however.

The Stingers added to their lead in the fourth on an RBI double by Jeff Guiel, who made his way home later in the inning on a pair of wild pitches by Tankersley to make it 3-0.

The Beavers broke their 13-inning scoring drought in the fifth when Yamid Haad hit a solo home run, his second of the year, to cut the Stingers' lead back to two.

Tankersley struck out nine and walked four in seven innings of work for the Beavers. Cliff Bartosh spelled Tankersley in the eighth and struck out the side in his inning of work. Brandon Villafuerte struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the tie. The pitching trio combined to strike out seven straight Stingers at one point late in the game. By the time all was said and done, Portland pitchers struck out a season-high 16.

The two teams conclude their series Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
