Sting Set Franchise Wins Record, Defeat Attack 5-4

The Sarnia Sting hosted the Owen Sound Attack on Sunday afternoon.

It was billet appreciation day at Progressive Auto Sales Arena. Before the puck dropped, the Sting brought each player's host family down to ice level for a pre-game ceremony. The entire Sting organization is very thankful for all of the amazing support our billets provide to each and every player they open their homes to.

Moving into the game, it was a record-breaking day.

Sarnia defeated Owen Sound by a final score of 5-4 in overtime. With today's forty-third victory of the campaign, the Sting have set the new club record for wins in a single season. And boy oh boy, did they ever earn this one.

In the first period, everything was working in the Attack's favour. Owen Sound forwards Jonah Gadjovich and Alan Lyszczarczyk each scored for the Attack. Penalties smothered the frame, with both sides engaging in a very physical matchup through the first twenty minutes. After one, it was 2-0 for Owen Sound.

In the second, the Attack continued to control the play. Maksim Sushko put the Attack up 3-0, and we carried onward to the third period.

In the final frame, it was game time.

Sting forward Jonathan Ang continued his stellar play of late. Ang scored his twenty-fourth of the season on a rush that will surely be one of the OHL's plays of the month. Call it a 3-1 game.

Cam Dineen followed up a few minutes later for Sarnia, bringing the Attack's lead within one. Dineen sent a seeing-eye point shot through Owen Sound netminder Olivier Lafreniere. 3-2.

Veteran forward Ethan Szypula appeared to give the Attack's lead a safety cushion. Szypula put the visitors up 4-2, and it was looking as though the game was out of reach.

Not so fast.

Sting rookie forward Jamieson Rees was handed a penalty shot with five minutes left in regulation time. Of course, Rees put it home. Rees's fifth of the year brought the Sting within one.

Paging rocket man.

Sarnia overage forward Jordan Ernst scored the game-tying goal with forty-eight seconds to play. Ernst's twenty-seventh of the season brought The Hive to a frenzy. For the second consecutive game, we were off to overtime.

Just seventeen seconds into the extra frame, Sting captain Jordan Kyrou scored the record-breaking goal. Kyrou's team-leading thirty-sixth of the season sealed our forty-third victory of the year. Down by a score of 3-0 in the third period, the Sting mounted a tremendous comeback to take this afternoon's game by a final score of 5-4.

Justin Fazio recorded the win in net, stopping twenty-five of twenty-nine shots faced.

The Sting return to action on Tuesday night in Kitchener. Game time against the Rangers is 7:00 PM at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.
