March 4, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Peterborough Petes visited the Meridian Centre this afternoon for a Sunday matinee, as the IceDogs closed out their homestand weekend. Today's game marked the 100th regular season game of defenceman, and NHL draft eligible, Justin MacPherson's career thus far. Coming into the game, both teams had two wins in their preview 5 games. While the 'Dogs were coming off a tough loss on Friday, the Petes were defeated in Erie, which guaranteed an 11th straight playoff appearance for Niagara.
The 'Dogs got off to a hot start in the first period. Despite some confusion, and a lengthy review nearing the midway point of the 1st period, Bradey Johnson scored his 10th goal of the season, beating Dylan Wells five-hole. Johnson's goal was assisted by Will Lochead, and Justin MacPherson. The IceDogs continued to dominate the Petes in shots for the remainder of the first period, but were unable to beat Wells.
Just under three minutes into the second period, the 'Dogs continued to press hard in the offensive zone, and it paid off for them. Oliver Castleman potted his 9th goal of the season to double the lead over the Petes. Danial Singer and Andrew Bruder were credited with the assists on Oli's goal. The physicality between these two teams escalated as the game wore on, with both sides starting to take exception to the rough play. With under three minutes to play in the period, Ben Jones battled in front of the net and shot home his 22nd goal of the season to extend our lead to three! Sam Miletic added to his team leading 84 points on the season with an assist on Jonesy's goal. Danial Singer was credited with his 2nd point of the game with the secondary assist.
At the end of the second period, the physical play was taken to another level, but the 'Dogs found themselves on a 5 minute powerplay. The Petes scored early to cut their lead down to 2. Going down the stretch in the period, the Petes added another goal with just over 5 to play in regulation. With un two minutes remaining in the game, Sam Miletic battled off two Petes defenders to score an empty net goal and re-gain the 2-goal lead!
This game ended with a 4-2 score.
The IceDogs are back in action at home, on Thursday, as they host the Flint Firebirds.
