A six-goal first period powered the London Knights to a lopsided 11-4 victory over the Sarnia Sting, Wednesday afternoon in front of 3,581 fans at the RBC Centre.
The loss dropped Sarnia's record 18-14-1-2 in the Ontario Hockey League.
The Knights came out firing on all cylinders as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the game was seven minutes old.
After taking the 6-0 advantage after 20 minutes, they increased their lead to 9-2 after the second.
"It's disappointing," said Sting head coach Trevor Letowski. "We looked forward to the game and had talked about it all week. There was good energy in the building. But things got away from us early and the game was basically over after one period."
But Letowski always looks at the positive.
"This one hurts, but we've had a very consistent run the last couple of months. We have to move forward and try and find a way to get points. This one is done and now we can see how we respond."
Letowski refused to use the lack of regulars as an excuse. Sarnia was missing eight players. They played with 19 players, one under the limit and had only five defencemen. Of those five rearguards, two were rookies and one was a call up from junior B.
The Sting did not have an answer for three London players, Michael McCarron, Christian Dvorak and Mitchell Marner.
McCarron, a late cut from the United States junior team, registered three goals and four assists, Dvorak had three goals and three assists while Marner chipped in with two goals and four assists.
Chandler Yakimowicz, Aaron Berisha and Victor Mete had the other London goals.
First round draft pick, Jakob Chychrun led the Sting with a goal and two assists. He now has 11 points in 15 games.
Daniel Nikandrov and Jake O'Donnell each had a goal and two assists as O'Donnell notched his first career OHL goal. Noah Bushnell also scored for the Sting.
Michael Giugovaz was the winning goalie as he faced only 21 shots.
Taylor Dupuis started for the Sting allowing six goals on nine shots. Justin Fazio played the second and third periods giving up five goals on 18 shots.
London went four-for-four on the power play while Sarnia was one-for-four.
Next action for the Sting is Friday night when they travel to London to meet the Knights again. On Saturday night Sarnia is in Saginaw to battle the Spirit.
Sarnia's next home game is Thursday, Jan. 8th when they host the top-ranked Erie Otters beginning at 7:05 p.m. at the RBC Centre.
Tickets for all remaining home games are on sale daily at the RBC Box Office, by calling 519-541-1717 or going online at Sarniasting.com
