Soo Greyhounds News Release
SAULT STE. MARIE, ON- With the help of their five-goal second period, and a five point performance in the game by JARED MCCANN, the Soo Greyhounds put their two-game losing skid to a halt on Tuesday Night.
In their final game of 2014, the Soo Greyhounds overpowered the Saginaw Spirit in a 7-2 victory on home ice.
In what was the second half of a home-and-home series with the Spirit, it was the visitors with some early chances to get on the board.
Twenty-seconds into the game Connor Brown put a shot off the cross bar fro the goal line to JOSEPH RAAYMAKERS right, and then a redirected Saginaw shot found iron shortly thereafter while the game stayed scoreless.
Greyhounds chances would follow.
After a strong shift by the Hounds "fourth" line, KEIGAN GOETZ found BRYAN MOORE alone in front only to be stopped by Jake Paterson.
HAYDEN VERBEEK was sent to the net by GABE GUERTLER later in the period to no avail and the two sides would skate through twenty minutes scoreless.
After a Hounds penalty in the final seconds of the first, the locals would start the second period shorthanded for 1:52, and would be flawless killing it off allowing just one shot against.
Almost immediately after that the Hounds would have back-to-back power plays and would strike on both.
At 2:24, KYLE JENKINS stepped from the left point and towards the circle before blasting home his 3rd goal of the year for a 1-0 Greyhound lead.
That power play goal was followed up by another when JARED MCCANN moved to the circled and emphatically put a shot upstairs for his 14th of the year, and a 2-0 Greyhounds lead at 4:22.
By that point of the period the Hounds had a 6-1 shot advantage and would hold Saginaw to just eight in the entire period.
MAC HOLLOWELL made it 3-0 Greyhounds after ANTHONY SALINITRI won the draw back in the offensive zone to the Hounds rearguard.
Hollowell's shot appeared to redirect off someone in front before going past Paterson for the three goal cushion at 6:49.
For Hollowell, it was his second goal in as many games since being recalled up to the Hounds.
Saginaw would cut into the Hounds lead at 12:03 when Mitchell Stephens picked up a loose puck at the Greyhound blue line and fired it past the blocker of Raaymakers to make it a 3-1 game.
After the puck was chipped up the boards creating a 2-on-1 for the Hounds, ZACH SENYSHYN regained the Hounds three goal lead at 14:26.
Skating up the right wing, Senyshyn opted for the shot resulting in his 10th goal of the season. It wouldn't be the last we would hear from Senyshyn.
A shorthanded goal by Saginaw at 16:06 pulled the Spirit closer before Senyshyn netted his second of the period.
With just 37 seconds to play in the second period a 2-on-2 saw JARED MCCANN flip the puck to SENYSHYN who broke past the Saginaw defense and before losing the puck nicely backhanded home the goal ending the period with a 5-2 Greyhounds lead.
The Hounds outshot Saginaw 16-8 in the period.
While allowing Saginaw just two shots in the opening 11:49 of the third period, the Hounds would also extend their lead further.
BLAKE SPEERS recorded his 18th goal of the year at the 8:40 mark making it a 6-2 game.
With numerous other chances in the period all part of their sixteen shots, the Hounds would round out the scoring with less than five minutes to go.
Off a draw, the puck came back to MEDRIC MERCIER who through a crowd found the back of the net for his 2nd goal of the season, with assists to GUSTAV BOURAMMAN and JEAN DUPUY.
JARED MCCANN would end the night with his first five-point night of his career (1g, 4a) while the Hounds improved their record to 26-8-0-2, ending 2014 with 54 points.
