January 24, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Sarnia Sting News Release
The Sarnia Sting dropped a 3-2 decision in overtime to the Windsor Spitfires, Saturday night in front of 3,108 fans at the RBC Centre.
Windsor's Logan Brown scored the game winner just 20 seconds into extra time when his low shot from a sharp angle eluded Sting goalie Taylor Dupuis.
Sarnia never led in the game as Windsor held a 1-0 lead after one period and 2-1 after 40 minutes. The Sting tied the game early in the third period.
"It's a good point for our team," said assistant coach Andy Delmore of the Sting. "We battled hard the entire game. We were a little short-staffed again, so we are happy with the outcome. It was a hard-fought game."
Delmore said the Sting did not take the Spitfires lightly.
"We knew they have been playing well of late. In the Ontario Hockey League you can't take teams lightly. They took it to us the entire game. We will be ready to go for the re-match."
The Spitfires scored the only goal of period one at 14:18 when Jamie Lewis backhanded home a low rebound.
Windsor increased their lead to 2-0 at 3:13 of period two when Cristiano DiGiacinto snapped a screened shot into the top corner past Dupuis.
It took a shorthanded goal to get the Sting on the scoresheet at 9:03. Alex Renaud took a cross-ice pass from Troy Lajeunesse and whipped a quick shot into the top corner on the glove side.
Zachary Core also assisted on Renaud's eighth goal of the season and second in as many games.
The Spitfires had a great chance to increase their lead at 14:39 when Markus Soberg was awarded a penalty shot. But the Windsor player put forth a feeble effort as his soft backhand went wide of the net.
Sarnia tied the game at 6:27 of period three when Hayden Hodgson backhanded home a rebound for his 15th goal of the season. Jeff King and Brandon Lindberg drew assists.
There were good chances at both ends the rest of the way with both netminders, Dupuis and Windsor's Brendan Johnston making solid stops.
That set the stage for Brown's overtime winner.
Windsor finished with a 38-24 edge in shots on goal.
Sarnia was zero-for-four on the power play and Windsor zero-for-two.
The Sting welcomed Lajeunesse back into the lineup after missing three games. Sarnia had 20 players dressed with the addition of callups Chase Campbell and Franco Sproviero.
Still on the shelf with injuries as goalie Justin Fazio, along with Noah Bushnell, Pavel Zacha, Patrick White, Connor Schlichting and Nikita Korostelev.
The overtime loss leaves the Sting with a 22-17-4-2 record.
The same two clubs meet again Sunday night in Windsor. It's the start of three straight road games for the Sting as next weekend they play in Ottawa and Kingston.
Sarnia's next home game is Thursday, Feb. 5th when the host the Kitchener Rangers.
Tickets for all remaining home games are on sale daily at the RBC Box Office, by calling 519-541-1717 or going online at Sarniasting.com.
