Sting Complete Day One of the 2022 OHL Priority Selection
April 29, 2022 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Sarnia Sting News Release
Sarnia, ON. - Sarnia Sting General Manager Dylan Seca and his scouting staff completed rounds one through three of the 2022 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection Friday night.
With the fifth overall selection, Seca snagged 6'03" forward, Porter Martone from the Toronto Jr. Canadiens U16 AAA team. The Peterborough, ON native tallied 104 points (41 goals, 63 assists) in 53 Greater Toronto Hockey League games this season. Hockey runs deep in the Martone bloodlines as his father Mike captained the Peterborough Petes in the 1997-98 OHL season and his cousin Nolan Burke has developed into a top scorer for the Sting.
On the addition of Porter, Seca comments:
"Porter is a dynamic forward, with a combination of skill, compete, and goal scoring. We also love his character. He's an outstanding teammate and someone we know will put the work in to become an impressive player in this league for years to come."
With the forty-fifth overall selection, the Sting were proud to select 5'10" right-shooting centreman Sean Doherty of the Ajax-Pickering Raiders U16 AAA club. Doherty, a native of Scarborough, ON, recorded 21 goals and 14 assists for a total of 26 games played in the Eastern AAA Hockey League this season in addition to 4 goals and 4 assists in 6 playoff games.
"We couldn't be more excited to get Doherty's combination of speed, skill, and compete. He's an exciting player to watch and one that made his teammates better all year." Sting Ontario Scout Mike Neely comments on the third-round pick.
With the Hockey Club's final pick in Day One of the Draft, the Sting welcomed Carson Campbell, a 6'0 right-handed defenceman from Campbellford, Ontario. Through 26 games played in the ETAHL, Campbell scored 3 goals and 11 assists for the Quinte Red Devils U16 AAA team.
"Carson is a pass first defenceman who we see excelling at moving the puck out of his own zone to the forwards in transition. He is also comfortable moving along the offensive blue line and plays a heads-up style. We look forward to seeing him progress in Sarnia." Comments Director of Player Personnel Kyle Craner.
The Sarnia Sting Hockey Club would like to congratulate Porter, Sean, and Carson as well as all other prospects selected in the Day One of the OHL Priority Selection tonight and look forward to selecting 12 more prospects during Day Two of the Draft, scheduled to start for 9am Saturday morning.
