September 24, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Sarnia Sting News Release
With the 2015-16 campaign getting underway tomorrow, Head Coach, Derian Hatcher and General Manager, Nick Sinclair announced today that overage forward Daniel Nikandrov has been named team captain, while Jakob Chychrun, Josh Jacobs, Brandon Lindberg and Alex Black will serve as assistants.
Hatcher comments on today's announcement, "As a staff, we feel that we have a really strong leadership group moving forward. These guys come to the rink every day, ready to work, and with a positive attitude. We have set high standards and expectations for our players both on and off the ice. We're going to lean on this leadership group to hold their teammates accountable, and ensure that everyone is working towards the high expectations that we've set."
Newly appointed Captain, Daniel Nikandrov is entering his fifth and final season with the hockey club. He served as an alternate captain for the last two seasons, and is the only overage player on the Sting roster. Nikandrov had a breakout season last year, playing in all 68 regular season games, and tallying a career-high 49 points.
Assistant Captain, Jakob Chychrun is entering his second season with the club, after being selected first overall in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection. Midway through last season, Chychrun was rewarded for his leadership qualities, and named as one of the club's three alternate captains. Heading into his draft year, Chychrun is looking to improve on a rookie campaign that saw him record 33 points in just 42 games.
Josh Jacobs, who's new to the City of Sarnia, brings a wealth of experience and passion for the game to the locker room. After being selected by the Devils in the second round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Jacobs logged big minutes for the Spartans last year, playing in all situations.
Brandon Lindberg, who's entering his 4th OHL Season, has also been named as one of the four assistant captains for 2015-16. In 59 games last season, Lindberg recorded a career high 13 goals, and played in all situations for the club.
Lastly, 97-born defenceman, Alex Black will round out the leadership group for the Sarnia Sting. Despite this season only being Alex's second year in the league, he is a guy who's well respected in the dressing room, and leads by example on the ice.
