Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA- A goaltenders duel went the way of Hayden Stewart and the Dubuque Fighting Saints Saturday night at the Edge Ice Arena. The Fighting Saints goaltender stood tall, stopping all 39 Steel shots thrown at him, to lead Dubuque to a 1-0 victory on the road. Stewart notched his second win of the season, and Dubuque stayed perfect, improving its record to 6-0-0 on the young season.
The first period saw the team's combine for 27 shots but no goals were scored. Steel netminder Chris Nell made several point blank saves, including stopping Robby Darrar alone in front on a two-on-one. Nell kicked aside 16 shots in the first period while Stewart stopped 11 shots.
Jacob Benson opened the scoring for the Fighting Saints in the game's middle frame. With a Steel player shaken up behind the play, Dubuque charged up ice on an odd-man rush. Shane Kavanagh sent the puck to Joe Llaurardo, and the Wisconsin native darted right up the middle of the ice. He passed the puck to Benson on the left wing, and the forward one-timed a slapshot that hit goaltender Nell in the shoulder, but ricocheted into the net to make it 1-0 Dubuque at 3:31 of the second period.
In the third period, the Steel pushed and were awarded numerous powerplays. The Fighting Saints penalty kill continued its success and kept Chicago off the scoreboard in six attempts on the man-advantage. Dubuque penalty kill has not allowed a goal this season. A large part of that Saturday was Stewart, who turned aside 16 shots in the game's final frame.
Chicago outshot Dubuque 39-35 but took the loss, falling to 0-8-0 on the season. The two teams play again next week.
The rematch of the two squads is Friday in Dubuque for Pink the Rink, presented by Unity Point Health Finley Hospital. The Fighting Saints will wear special pink jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game with all proceeds going to the Visiting Nurses Association. Tickets are available for this night supporting a great cause by calling 563.583.6880 or online at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
