Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - Will Stewart threw a complete game shutout, striking out a career-high 10 batters, as the BlueClaws topped Greensboro 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
Stewart's complete game was just the fourth nine-inning effort by a BlueClaws starter since 2011 and first since Nick Fanti threw a no-hitter against Charleston on July 17th last year. The left-hander from Hazel Green, Alabama gave up just three hits and faced one hitter more than the minimum in improving to 5-0 on the year and lowering his ERA to 1.23.
The BlueClaws (31-21) have now won six straight games, pulling within 2.5 games of first place Kannapolis (pending their game Wednesday night). Greensboro falls to 23-27 on the year.
Lakewood got their first two runs in the second inning on an RBI groundout from Gregori Riveroand an RBI single from Josh Stephen.
Jake Scheiner, who has now hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games, hit an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Edward Cabrera (1-5) allowed two runs in seven innings for Greensboro but took the loss.
Nick Maton had two hits for the BlueClaws in the loss.
Lakewood's win gave them a league-leading nine shutouts so far this season.
The BlueClaws look for the sweep of the three-game series on Thursday night at 6:35 pm. LHP Kyle Young (1-1) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Ryan Lillie (3-1).
