ABOUT LAST GAME: The Fireflies snuck past the RiverDogs, 3-2, in the series opener on Tuesday night at Joe P. Riley Park. Briam Campusano was tremendous out of the bullpen for Columbia. The righty pitched the final five innings, allowed zero earned runs, and recorded five strikeouts. It was the longest outing by a Firefly reliever so far this season.
BATTLE ON THE HILL: Pitching has been a huge storyline through the first nine games of the season series between Columbia and Charleston. As a staff, the Fireflies hold a 2.52 ERA and have 91 strikeouts against their fellow Southern Division rival. Meanwhile, the RiverDogs have 1.94 ERA with 72 strikeouts.
HE DARES YOU: Ali Sanchez threw out two more base runners on Tuesday against Charleston. The 21-year-old has now thrown out 13 of 29 runners this season (44.8%).
STREAKIN': On Tuesday, outfielder Raphael Gladu extended his franchise-record hit streak to 14 straight games. The longest hitting streak in the SAL this season belongs to Shael Mendoza (17 games). Gladu is hitting .367 (18-for-49) during the hit streak.
Longest Fireflies Hit Streaks (2016-pres.):
1. 14-Raphael Gladu ... May 9-pres.
T-2. 11-Rigoberto Terrazas ... April 9-20, 2018
T-2. 11-David Thompson ... April 7-17, 2016
STREAKIN' x 2: There have been three different Fireflies this season to record on-base streaks of 16 games or longer:
1. 29, Jeremy Vasquez (April 5-May 6)* *SAL & franchise-best
2. 19, Raphael Gladu (May 2-present)
3. 16, Scott Manea (April 21-May 12)
MAY MADNESS: Columbia played in another tight game on Sunday. The club has played in what's felt like nothing but close games of late:
- 26 of Columbia's last 32 games have been decided by three runs or fewer (more specifically, 20 of the club's 25 games in May)
SUPURB VISON: Columbia is the only team in MiLB with three players leading their respective league in total walks:
South Atlantic League (Low A)
1. Blake Tiberi (COL) - 33
2. Jeremy Vasquez (COL) - 30
3. Matt Winaker (COL) - 29
GOOD COMPANY: Blake Tiberi drew four walks on Tuesday night. He became the third player in Fireflies history to accomplish this feat. Gene Cone earned four walks on April 6, 2017 and Jeremy Vasquez did the same on April 12, 2018.
