Red Deer Rebels News Release

The Red Deer Rebels are hoping the best is yet to come from Blake Stevenson.

Rebels GM Brent Sutter acquired the 20-year-old forward from the Saskatoon Blades on Thursday, giving up a fourth-round pick (originally belonging to Victoria) in this year's WHL prospects draft set for December, and a seventh-round pick in 2022.

A fourth-round selection of the Tri-City Americans in the 2016 draft, Stevenson was traded to Saskatoon in February of this year and went on to score seven goals and add seven assists in 24 games with the Blades in the Regina Eastern Division bubble.

"He's someone who is a right-hand shot who we know can play in one of our top nine forward positions," said Sutter. "He had a pretty good season with Saskatoon in the bubble and being a 20-year-old, he also brings maturity.

"He can skate and he has skills. He's somebody we're excited about acquiring, someone we think can help our forward group."

The acquisition of the six-foot, 194-pound Calgary native leaves the Rebels with four overage players, also including Arshdeep Bains, Zak Smith and Liam Keeler. The team has until Oct. 10 to get down to three 20-year-olds.

The Rebels conclude their preseason schedule with a home and home set with the Lethbridge Hurricanes - Friday in Lethbridge and Saturday at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

Red Deer's regular-season opener is Friday, Oct. 1 versus the host Edmonton Oil Kings. The Oil Kings visit the Peavey Mart Centrium the following evening (Sat. Oct. 2) for the Red Deer Advocate Home Opener.
