Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, Pa. - Another pitching duel prevented a high scoring game, but Eric Stephens found a way to break through with one giant swing for the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, as they went on to win Monday night, 1-0, against the Oakland County Cruisers.
At one point, Washington pitchers did not allow a hit through five innings from the fourth to the ninth, and shut out the opposing team, allowing only three hits on the night. Washington starter Billy Muldowney went six strong innings allowing only three hits and walking only one. Arguably, Oakland County starter Joe Rodriguez may have pitched slightly better, going 6.1 innings while striking out six, though he did have the one blemish that sealed the game for the Wild Things.
After an impressive sliding catch in center field by Jon Kourie prevented the winning run from reaching base in the top of the seventh, Stephens put the game in his hands, hitting a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the inning for the only run of the game. The next inning, a great play by Denny Duron kept the Cruisers' tying run from reaching base yet again. A sharply hit bouncer to shortstop by Jacob Taylor was charged and scooped up by Duron, who quickly threw him out.
There were only six hits in the entire game, with all pitchers combining for 15 strikeouts. The Wild Things took three innings to get through their entire lineup before Mark McGonigle got the first hit for Washington. The only players to reach base twice were McGonigle and Kyle Maunus for Oakland County.
The Wild Things go for the sweep against the Cruisers Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:55 p.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM. All kids 12 and under eat free at CONSOL Energy Park, receiving a voucher for a free hot dog, soft drink and chips as they enter the ballpark courtesy of ServiceLink.
