Evansville Otters News Release

(EVANSVILLE, Ind.) - The Evansville Otters rallied from two runs down in the 9th inning to defeat the Southern Illinois Miners 5-4 on a walk-off single from Greg Alexander.

It is the third walk-off winner for the Otters outfielder who previously beat the Lake Erie Crushers on a home run and the Florence Freedom with a thirteenth inning RBI single.

On Monday night, Evansville led 1-0 when Billy Killian singled in a run against Miners starter Brett Scarpetta. Southern Illinois regained the lead with four runs in the top of the third inning when the team batted.

Down 4-1, the Otters cut the deficit in half with a Greg Alexander sacrifice fly but that would be the final run scored until the bottom of the ninth inning.

Evansville starter Chad Edwards threw a season-high 123 pitches as he kept the score the same into the 8th inning. Brett Scarpetta also did the same as the righty pitched 7 1/3 innings while giving up two runs.

The game then became a battle of the bullpens. Chris Rollins pitched a scoreless 8th inning for the Otters and closer Jared Simon struck out the side in the ninth. The same could not be said for Southern Illinois.

In the bottom of the inning, Evansville took advantage of back to back walks. The Otters worked the count against three different pitchers to tie up the game.

Jarred Ball singled to push the Otters within a run and Brian Kolb greeted the new reliever Brent DuFoor with a bloop single to left field. Greg Alexander then stepped up to the plate and singled up the middle, scoring pinch runner Pat Rose and securing the 5-4 comeback win over the first place Southern Illinois Miners.

Jared Simon (2-0) receives the win after pitching a scoreless top of the 9thinning. Reliever Alex Thieroff (1-3) takes the loss after giving up 3 runs in 1/3 of an inning.

The Evansville Otters are now 20-38 this season with the win as the Southern Illinois Miners are currently 44-15.

The Otters and Miners will meet again tomorrow night in the series finale at Bosse Field. First pitch is set for 6:35 PM on Deaconess Night at the Ballpark.
