Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - Milt Stegall will be inducted into the Winnipeg Football Club's Hall of Fame today.
Stegall will be inducted at tonight's Legacy Dinner at Canad Inns Polo Park. He will also be honoured at the Blue Bombers' home opener on Friday, July 10 against Calgary.
"The fans of the Blue Bombers and the CFL have been very privileged to have witnessed the accomplishments of Milt Stegall," said Lyle Bauer, President and CEO of the Winnipeg Football Club.
"As impressive as Milt has been on the field, he has been equally impressive off the field and that is a tribute to him as a person."
The prolific slot back played 14 years for the Blue Bombers, and became an icon in the city of Winnipeg. Stegall is not only a fan-favorite, but arguably the finest receiver to ever play in the CFL.
At the top of the CFL list with 147 career touchdowns, 144 career receiving touchdowns, most touchdowns in a season with 23; Stegall's name is also etched in nearly every Blue Bomber receiving record. He is ranked number one in team history with the most receptions (854), the most 1,000 yard receiving seasons (10), and most receiving yards in a season (1,896). His 15,153 career receiving yards place him at the top of that category.
"Milt's records will stand for a long time and it will be interesting to watch CFL stars aspire to those levels of performance," Bauer said.
Stegall has been one of the most popular players in team history, both with among fans and teammates. His achievements on the field include being named a division all-star eight times, a league all-star six times, and in 2002, Stegall was the CFL's Most Outstanding Player.
The Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame was initiated in 1984 to recognize the contributions of the many players, coaches, executives and volunteers who have contributed to the success of the organization over the years. Inductees are selected by a committee comprised of former players and executives and are honoured each year at the football club's Legacy Dinner. This year the Hall of Fame celebrates its 25th anniversary.
