Sanford Mainers News Release
With only one week left to play and a five game win streak snapped the game before, the Mainers walked into North Adams with a fighting chance for the final playoff spot. Two games behind the Mystic Schooners, the Mainers continue to hang on though falling on Saturday night to the SteepleCats 7-2.
The Schooners also lost keeping the Mainers still two games back, but with only seven games left in the season, work needs to be done.
Mainers starter EJ Ashworth was 1-5 going into the game, and the struggles that he has had all season long continued. The "one bad inning" and the lack of offense when Ashworth has been on the mound paved its way once again.
The SteepleCats took the lead in the bottom of the first when Garrett Tuck lined a one out single to right. He came all the way around to score when Kevin Martir doubled down the left field line.
In the top of the third the Mainers were able to tie it against SteepleCats starter Scott Squier who is currently leading the league in strikeouts as a pitcher. Troy Black reached first to lead off the inning on a dropped third strike due to a wild pitch. Sam Balzano pushed Black to second on a sacrifice bunt and then came around to score on an infield single off the bat of Daniel Nevares after stealing third.
Just a half inning later the "one bad inning" that Ashworth has seen all season long haunted him again as he gave up four runs. Joe Landi started the inning with a one out double to left and advanced to third on Tuck's second hit of the game. Martir hit his second double of the game scoring Landi, while Tuck and Martir scored on a double from Brad Anderson. Dominic Severino grabbed an RBI of his own singling to left with two outs, plating Anderson.
After an RBI ground out in the fifth for North Adams they led the Mainers 6-1, but Nic Wilson smashed a 2-0 pitch to left field in the sixth for his third home run of the season to make the score 6-2.
The SteepleCats grabbed another run in the seventh which led to the final score of 7-2.
The Mainers head into Laconia on Sunday to take on the Muskrats. James Bourque is expected to make the start for the Moose with hopes of gaining ground on the final playoff spot. Game time is set for 6:30pm.
