Brampton Steelheads News Release
Belleville, ON - The Steelheads visited the Belleville Bulls Saturday evening in what would be their third meeting of the season. Coming off a 4-1 home loss to the Ottawa 67s, the Steelheads were looking to end their two game losing streak and head into Sunday's game on a positive note. The Bulls edged the Peterborough Petes 5-4 on Thursday, and a win Saturday would extend their winning streak to 3 games heading into the holiday break.
Spencer Martin and Charlie Graham, two of the league's top goaltenders in saves, would get the start in goal. Cramarossa would test Martin early on with a wrap-around chance but Martin was up for the challenge. With Belleville keeping up the pressure, Marchment fired a wrist-shot from the point that was easily gloved by Martin. A cross-checking penalty would send Nick Zottl to the box at 4:17, giving the Bulls a power play opportunity early on. Despite some good puck movement by the Bulls, the Steelheads kept their chances to a minimum and successfully killed off the penalty. Welychka had the best chance for the Bulls, splitting the Steelheads defense to create a partial breakaway, but was stopped by Martin.
Belleville continued to pepper Martin with a flurry of early chances in the second. Sean Day created a good chance for the Trout, feeding a pass into the slot that was unfortunately picked up by the Bulls before making it to his intended target. McLeod and Gustavsen would head to the box at 3:30 for interference and a closed hand on puck penalty respectively, resulting in 2 minutes of 4-on-4 action. The Steelheads had a number of good chances during the 4-on-4 but couldn't get anything past Graham. The goalies would continue to be the difference in the second with big saves at both ends to keep the game scoreless heading into the second intermission.
The back and forth affair continued throughout the third period as each team had their fair share of opportunities, but the top notch goaltending would force the game to overtime. The Steelheads had the best chance in extra time, but Charlie Graham made a huge save to keep the game scoreless and push it to a shootout.
Sam Babintsev was up first for the Trout and did not disappoint. Stephen Harper would shoot next but couldn't beat Martin. Lucas Venuto was up next for the Steelheads and made a nifty move, but took the puck a bit too wide. Welychka would shoot second for the Bulls, but was stopped by the pad of Martin. Jimmy Lodge would have the chance to win it, and he did just that as Steelheads edged the Bulls 1-0 in the shootout. Spencer Martin had 41 saves on the night as he earned a well-deserved shutout.
The Steelheads close out the weekend tomorrow at the Hershey Centre when they host the Sudbury Wolves at 2:00 pm. Great tickets are still available online through Ticketmaster and at the Hershey Centre box office.
