North Bay Battalion News Release

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators have signed the North Bay Battalion's Nick Paul to a three-year entry-level contract, the National Hockey League club announced Saturday.

It was the second milestone in two days for Paul, who was named Friday night to the 22-man Canadian roster for the World Junior Championship, which opens next Friday at Toronto and Montreal.

"Pretty amazing and eventful last couple of days, making Team Canada and signing my first contract," Paul wrote on his Twitter feed.

Ottawa acquired the rights to Paul, 19, from the Dallas Stars last July 1 for centre Jason Spezza and right winger Ludwig Karlsson. The Senators also received right winger Alex Chiasson, left winger Alex Guptill and a second-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft in the trade.

Paul has played centre and left wing in the current Ontario Hockey League season, scoring 19 goals and earning 15 assists for 34 points in 27 games. He leads the Battalion in goals and points.

A fifth-round choice in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection from the Mississauga Reps major midgets, Paul had been passed over the previous year, in which he first was eligible.

The Mississauga resident has scored 57 goals and added 51 assists for 108 points in 160 OHL games, including 12 goals and 16 assists for 28 points in 66 games as a rookie in 2012-13, when the Battalion was based in Brampton.

Dallas, which selected Paul in the fourth round of the 2013 NHL Draft, sent him to the Senators in a deal rich in Battalion background. Spezza played for Brampton in its 1998-99 expansion season as a 15-year-old super-underager under the residency rule of the time. Guptill was chosen by the Troops in the sixth round of the 2008 OHL Priority Selection but never reported.
