Belleville Bulls News Release
BELLEVILLE, ON - The Belleville Bulls wrapped up the first half of the 2014/15 season on Saturday night as they hosted the Mississauga Steelheads at the Yardmen Arena. The two clubs have split the season series so far, each winning one on home ice. It was a goaltender showcase in front of 2,400 fans as the Steelheads escaped with a 1-0 shootout victory.
The Bulls wasted no time testing Colorado Avalanche draft pick, Spencer Martin, jumping out to a 12-2 lead in shots after the first ten minutes. Both clubs had a power play in the frame but neither could capitalize on the man advantage. The Bulls led 16-7 in shots after 20 minutes.
It was much of the same in the second period. Toronto, Ontario native Charlie Graham stopped 11 shots in the frame while his counterpart, Martin, made 13 saves. The Bulls had a flurry of chances on their lone power play of the stanza but couldn't find the back of the net. Belleville continued to lead in shots 29-18.
Overtime was needed after a penalty free, scoreless third period. Both teams had a couple chances to seal the win in the extra frame but Graham and Martin continued to put on a clinic. Over time solved nothing as the contest had to be decided in a shootout.
Russian over age winger, Sam Babintsev and Winnipeg Jets prospect Jimmy Lodge were goal scorers in the shootout for Mississauga. Forwards Stephen Harper and Brett Welychka were unsuccessful shooters for the Bulls. Martin finished with 41 stops while Graham made 36 saves. Both netminders were the first and second stars respectively.
The Bulls head into the Christmas break with a 17-14-1-2 record, good for 4th in the Eastern Conference standings. The Bulls will be back in action on New Years Eve when they travel to Barrie take on Colts, then return back home to the Yardmen for an afternoon match up with the Kingston Frontenacs on New Years Day.
