Steelheads Sweep Falcons

November 23, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release

The Idaho Steelheads walked away with the second win in as many nights, beating the Fresno Falcons 2-1 before a crowd of 5,003 tonight at the Bank of America Centre.

Idaho scored first on a goal by Cory Morgan (8-9-17) who got one past Terry Friesen at 7:53. Dan Shermerhorn (7-7-14) and Steelheads captain, Jeremy Mylymok (4-3-7) recorded the assists. With less than 4 minutes left in the period, Fresno had the chance to tie it up with a one-man advantage. However, it was the Steelheads' Joe Rybar who would tally the next point on a goal assisted by Marty Flichel (10-7-17) and assists league-leader Scott Swanson (1-17-18) at the 19:59 mark to end the first period with Idaho up 2-0.

Try as they might, Fresno could not unravel Idaho's league-leading penalty killing. They missed two one-man advantage opportunities in the second period. Fresno's defense also kept Idaho at bay as they could not capitalize either and twice missed scoring on the power play.

Fresno would finally put their lone goal, in two games, on the board at 10:25 in the third when Jason Cugnet let one in. The shot came from Mike Mathers (5-4-9) who scored his 5th of the season at 10:25, assisted by Kris Porter (9-9-17) and Drew Schoneck (1-10-11). Friesen came out of the net for the final minute of play in Fresno's last attempt to tie it up, but the Steelheads managed to hold on to the one-goal lead.

Tonight's win makes Idaho's record against Fresno 2-2-1 on the season.
