Brampton Steelheads News Release

The Mississauga Steelheads would storm back in the third period scoring four goals to pull off a 5-4 comeback victory over the Barrie Colts on Sunday afternoon. Cole Schwindt's two goal third period fuelled the third period comeback that saw the Steelheads score four unanswered goals including a stretch that saw them score three in 40 seconds.

Sunday's first period got off to a rocky start for the Trout, as the Colts would score three consecutive goals to open the game. It was Aidan Brown who scored the first, as he tucked a shot past Jacob Ingham who had been fooled by a strange deflection at the near post. The goal was Brown's 14th of the season and his fourth goal against the Steelheads. The second would come 11 minutes later a turnover in the Steelheads zone was capitalized upon by Ryan Suzuki who fired a one-time shot perfectly into the lower right corner of Ingham's goal. The final goal of the first period Barrie onslaught came from Riley Piercey, the Mississauga, ON native lost his Steelheads defender in front and put a snap shot off the post and in. The Steelheads would head to their locker room down three despite outshooting Barrie 11-9 in the frame.

James Richmond chalked up the first period struggles to, "[gave] up a couple bad goals, gave up a couple bad giveaways like we've been doing and they ended up in our net."

The Steelheads would turn the tide of the game in the second period, a successful 5-on-3 penalty kill and some rough stuff livened up the bench. The high-energy approach would eventually earn the Steelheads a power play with just a minute remaining in the frame. Ben Hawerchuk's hooking penalty set the Steelheads up for their first of the day. After some good puck movement on the exterior Thomas Harley fed Cole Schwindt who made an incisive pass to the front of the net, Alan Lyszczarczyk got to the right area for his 38th of the season. The goal would cut the Barrie lead to 3-1.

The Steelheads would push for a tying goal for the first five minutes of the final period, the best two chances fell to Nick Isaacson. The big winger would just barely miss a backhand chance off a rebound in front of the net, his effort just barely slid past Kai Edmonds' far post. A shift later, Isaacson would streak down the left wing and fire a shot past Edmonds again, this time it was the iron that denied him of cutting Barrie's lead to one. Comeback plans were put on hold for an instant when Tyson Foerster beat Ingham with a shot off a Riley Piercey pass. It took Alan Lyszczarczyk 15 seconds to erase any momentum that the Colts found from Foerster's goal. The winger's 39th of the campaign pulled the Trout back within two. The game was made even more interesting 19 seconds later when Keean Washkurak found Cole Schwindt in the slot, Schwindt would get his third point of the day and first goal by wristing home a shot into the top of the net.

Schwindt on his team's fight back in the final six minutes, "I thought that we battled right to the end of the game, we were down and it shows we're good [at overcoming] adversity as a team."

The Paramount Fine Foods Centre crowd was on edge following Schwindt's goal and Barrie's slender one goal lead wouldn't last much longer. Just 21 seconds after the Schwindt goal Richard Whittaker drove hard to the net holding off a Barrie defender, Whittaker's effort got the puck to CJ Clarke who banged it on goal, the puck would sneak through Edmonds and to the back post where Nick Isaacson tapped the puck home with no hesitation. Some may have been satisfied with the score even at four, and a point rescued but Cole Schwindt would not. Alan Lyszczarczyk took a breakout pass from Nicholas Canade and jetted down the left wing boards, circled the net and feathered a pass perfectly to Cole Schwindt in front who snuck his shot through Kai Edmonds and into the back of the net. Schwindt's second of the period completed the four goal third period comeback putting the Steelheads up 5-4. The only drama that remained for the rest of the game was Alan Lyszczarczyk's quest for 40 goals, the over ager playing his final regular season OHL game just barely pushed an effort on the empty net wide. The game would end in a 5-4 victory that secured the Steelheads 5th place in the OHL's Eastern Conference.

The importance of the team's comeback performance from James Richmond, "I thought we pressed pretty good all night....and we stayed pushing and we got rewarded down there. The biggest thing was to show that we can win without a lot of guys in the line up."

The Steelheads will get their playoff campaign started next weekend when they face off against the loser of tonight's Sudbury-Oshawa game.
