Steelheads Preview: October 17 - 19
October 16, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Brampton Steelheads News Release
Last weekend the Mississauga Steelheads matched up against the Kingston Frontenacs in a home-and-home series and came out with four big points. Nathan Bastian shone on Friday as he scored two goals in the 5-1 victory. Spencer Martin was solid in goal as usual as he stopped 42 of 43 shots, giving him his 50th career OHL win. Kingston, not wanting to go down quietly, kept the rematch on Monday much tighter. The Fronts tied the game in the final minute, ensuring themselves a point in the contest, but couldn't complete the comeback as Mississauga won 3-2 in a shootout.
The Mississauga Steelheads have a record of 4-1-0-0 through the first five games of the 2014/15 season. This is the second year in a row that they have gotten off to a 4-1 start. This year, the Steelheads look poised to continue in their winning ways. This weekend, the Steelheads will begin their four-game road trip with visits to Ottawa on Friday and North Bay on Sunday.
Ottawa has struggled out of the gate and is 2-5 at this point; however, they are a perfect 2-0 at home. Goaltending has been an issue for the 67's, as they have allowed 36 goals in their first 7 games. A familiar Ottawa face will be behind the bench for the 67's on Friday, as Hall of Famer Brian Kilrea will return to his post as head coach for one night only. A one-game contract will allow Kilrea to spend his 80th birthday at the helm of the 67's. Kilrea coached the 67's for 33 seasons, and is the all-time winningest coach in major junior history. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003.
When Mississauga visits North Bay on Sunday, it will be the third in a four-game home stand for the Battalion, and the first of six meetings between these divisional rivals. The Battalion defeated the Barrie Colts on Thanksgiving Monday, and will play host the Soo Greyhounds tonight. North Bay is 3-0-3-0 to this point in the season and is the only Eastern Conference team to have not lost in regulation. They sit just one point ahead of the Steelheads in the Central Division.
