Brampton Steelheads News Release
The Steelheads prep for the final weekend of the regular season. They'll play three games in as many days, beginning on Friday as they welcome the North Bay Battalion to the Hershey Centre for one more visit.
The Trout lost both of their games last weekend, leaving them in a very vulnerable position as far as securing that final playoff spot is concerned. They followed up Friday's 5-2 home loss to the Colts with a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Oshawa Generals on Saturday.
Mississauga can now only reach a maximum of 57 points in the standings. Sitting at 56, and with three games remaining as well, the Peterborough Petes need just a win to mathematically eliminate the Steelheads from playoff contention.
The Petes won't weigh on the minds of the Trout until later on this weekend, as the two teams are set to play each other in the last game of their regular seasons.
First up this weekend is the North Bay Battalion, who currently sit in third place in the Eastern Conference. The Steelheads have yet to beat the Troops on home ice, but have played some solid hockey against them this season.
In the first meeting, Mississauga opened up an early two-goal lead, but saw that drift from their clutches as they lost the final 4-3. During their next visit to the North Bay Memorial Arena, the Steelheads dominated the score sheet, leading by as many as three goals en route to a 3-1 victory. The Steelheads have won two of their last three home games, and look to make it three of four come Friday.
On Saturday, Misssissauga will make the short trip to the Meridian Centre for the eighth and final regular season meeting with the Niagara IceDogs. The Steelheads were victorious in each of the first two outings against the Dogs this season, but have been bested by one of the hottest teams in the league since. With a win, the Trout can improve to a season series of 3-5 with Niagara this season.
To cap off the busy weekend and the 2014-15 regular season, the Steelheads will host the Peterborough Petes at their annual Fan Appreciation game.
To this point in the season, the Trout are 1-1-0-1 against the Petes. Through the first three meetings, the home team has emerged victorious every time. The Steelheads tried their best to buck this trend when they hosted the Petes in their game on New Years Day. The Trout battled back from a 4-2 deficit to force a shootout, but lost in four rounds, picking up a single point in the loss.
NOTABLES
Scoring against Barrie on Friday, Jimmy Lodge tied his career high for goals in a season with 28.
Everett Clark joined the 10-goal club, netting the lone goal against Oshawa on Saturday. The Steelheads have eight skaters with 10 or more goals.
Through 65 games this season, Nathan Bastian is the only Steelhead to have not missed a game.
Although he hasn't played since Dec 21, Spencer Martin still ranks in the top 20 in terms of saves made.
