Conference Coaches Recognize McIvor, Paul

NORTH BAY, Ont. - Marcus McIvor captured three categories and Nick Paul won two in the Ontario Hockey League's Coaches Poll, results of which were released Wednesday.

McIvor was voted most underrated player, best defensive defenceman and best penalty killer in the Eastern Conference. He also finished second in voting for best shot blocker.

Paul was selected best defensive forward and best on faceoffs in the voting, in which conference coaches considered one nominee from each team and cast ballots on a 5-3-1 points basis. No coach could vote for a player from his own team.

In addition, Jake Smith finished second in voting for best puckhandling goalie, while Kyle Wood was second in the hardest shot category.

Only Connor McDavid of the Erie Otters matched McIvor in winning as many as three of the 20 categories. In Western Conference balloting, McDavid took each of the best playmaker and best skater categories for a second straight season and the best stickhandler category for the third consective year.

McIvor garnered 21 points in the most underrated player category, three more than second-place finisher Dante Salituro of the Ottawa 67's.

Overage captain McIvor took the best defensive defenceman category with 37 points after finishing third last season. Josh Brown of the Oshawa Generals was runnerup with 29 points.

McIvor amassed 25 points as best penalty killer, while Brown again was second, with 18.

Brown won the voting for best shot blocker with 30 points, with McIvor getting 27.

Paul won the best defensive forward category with 31 points, as Oshawa's Cole Cassels finished second with 16. Voting was closer for best on faceoffs, as Paul edged Cassels 22-21.

For the second straight season, Smith finished second to Spencer Martin of the Mississauga Steelheads in the best puckhandling goalie category. Martin attracted 33 points to Smith's 19.

Mississauga's Brandon Devlin took the hardest shot category with 35 points, with Wood amassing 27.
