Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga prepares for a three in three weekend, as they leave behind their most recent road losses, and continue toward their goal of a playoff berth.
With the loss Tuesday, the Steelheads were unable to leapfrog the fifth place Belleville Bulls, before their head-to-head matchup at the Hershey Centre Friday.
Belleville sits just a point ahead of Mississauga in the tight Eastern Conference standings, and have a game in hand on the Trout.
On Saturday, the Fish travel to Barrie to take on their divisional rival in the Colts. This will be the first meeting between these clubs this season that won't include a plethora of stuffed bears raining onto the playing surface.
At 8-2-0-0, the Colts have been the hottest team in the league, and recently took the Central Division lead from the hands of the North Bay Battalion.
The Trout return to the Hershey Centre on Sunday to host the Owen Sound Attack. A match that will conclude the 2014-15 season series.
In the first meeting in Owen Sound, the Steelheads were lifted to victory with performances by Josh Burnside and Everett Clark.
Burnside had two goals in the game, opening the scoring in the first and drawing the Trout even with the attack in the second. The teams remained deadlocked through the third period and the extra frame. In the fourth round, Clark scored the only goal of the shootout, grabbing the extra point for Mississauga.
The Steelheads started their three-game road trip last week on the right foot, beating the Guelph Strom 2-1 in overtime.
Stephen Gibson netted his first career OHL goal to open the scoring for Mississauga, and Jimmy Lodge provided the overtime winner.
The good times ended there however, as the Trout dropped the latter two games in spectacular fashion, both to Eastern Conference opponents.
Jacob Brennan, playing in his second game with the Steelheads got the nod in goal against Oshawa. Mississauga did not have a favourable start to the game, surrendering what would be the game winner just 19 seconds after the opening whistle.
Oshawa jumped on the visiting team, potting three goals in the first period while limiting the Trout to just seven shots on goal. The game finished at 4-0, and Mississauga's offence wasn't plentiful enough to pose a threat to the Generals, totaling 19 shots in the contest.
The three-game road trip concluded with the Steelheads first visit to the Meridian Centre in Niagara on Tuesday.
The Steelheads were outshot in the first period, but Brennan was sharp in turning away all 15 attempts. Mississauga found success in the frame, converting on two opportunities, driving much of the play in the latter 10 minutes.
With a goal, Josh Burnside set a new career high with 13 on the season. He had recorded 12 goals in each of the last two seasons.
From the drop of the puck in the second frame, it was all IceDogs. Mississauga's lead was quickly erased and Niagara instated their first lead of the game. The IceDogs poured on as the momentum shifted to their side.
The final score was 7-2 for Niagara, as they scored seven unanswered to steal two points from their divisional rivals.
