Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads equaled a West Coast Hockey League season high with five power play goals as they beat the Fresno Falcons 6-5 Saturday night. The two teams have now played seven one-goal games this year, with Idaho winning five of those contests.

The Bank of America Centre crowd of 5, 318 had barely settled into its seats when the Steelheads' Ben Keup shoveled a backhander past Fresno goalie Terry Friesen's glove at the 59-second mark. Adam Copeland and Petr Suchanek picked up assists on the play. The Steelheads had a chance to go up 2-0 midway through the period but Dan Shermerhorn's shot on a breakaway was a bit high and wide of Friesen's net. Idaho led after one, 1-0.

The second period became a scorefest and a slugfest. Jason Weaver outworked the Steelheads defense and got a pass over to Chris Porter who got it past Idaho's netminder Jason Cugnet at 1:16. The Steelheads took the one-goal lead again on a power play goal at 6:40 on a blast by Jeremy Mylymok that was deflected in by Dan Shermerhorn. Next, the Porter and Weaver duo worked their magic again picking up two goals. The first came at 10:09 and the second just 37 seconds later to give the Falcons the 3-2 lead.

However, the Steelheads answered back with two quick ones, both with a two-man advantage to steal the lead again. Joe Rybar patiently brought the puck in and passed it to Adam Copeland who was in front of the net and scored at 13:05. Thirteen seconds later Rybar scored on a Dan Shermerhorn rebound. Fresno tied the game at 4 apiece with 19 seconds left in the period when Weaver knocked a slap shot in on a pass from Jason McBain from behind the net.

Fresno got a man-advantage at :55 of the third and capitalized with a goal at 1:13. Cory Murphy's slap shot was deflected in off Glen Gulutzan's skate and the Falcons had a 5-4 lead. The Steelheads would once again tie it when Adam Copeland scored a power play goal at 6:31. Then, Cory Morgan tallied the game-winning goal with 2:50 left in the game.

Mylymok shot from inside the blue line, Friesen made the save, but Morgan was there to put the rebound in the net. Fresno did not give up though and Cugnet had to make two great saves with only 20 seconds left in the game.

Fresno had 31 shots on net, while Idaho had 37. The two teams will play their last of the three-game series Sunday night at the Bank of America Centre. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
