San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO –– The San Diego Gulls tied the game in the third and won it in the shootout, defeating the struggling Long Beach Ice Dogs 3-2 Sunday evening, before 4,582 at the Sports Arena.

With the "W," the Gulls (36-18-3) complete a three-game weekend sweep of the Dogs and now move two points ahead of the idle Bakersfield Condors for second place in the West Coast Hockey League. San Diego has beaten its So. Cal rival 11 straight times and 13 of 14 this season.

Long Beach (17-35-4) jumped out of the gate with a power-play goal 2:34 into the first period. Chris Peyton fired a shot from the blue line that Cris Classen saved. But after a couple of whacks at the rebound, Richard Paul poked it just over the goal line for his second tally of the season.

Jamie O'Leary gave the Ice Dogs a 2-0 advantage with his team-leading 17th goal 3:38 into the second. O'Leary skated down the left wing and snapped a shot that was inadvertently redirected in by Trevor Sherban's stick.

San Diego cut the lead in half at 9:32 of the middle frame on Dennis Purdie's fourth of the year. Sylvain Deschatelets won the faceoff back to Marc Busenburg, whose ensuing wrist shot was tipped home by Purdie skating in front of a screened Mike Buzak. Mark Pederson also earned an assist to extend his point streak to 10 games.

The Gulls kept the offensive attack going in the third and tied it up at 11:14. Busenburg crept in from the blue line, took a pass from Pederson behind the net and beat Buzak at point-blank range. It was Busenburg's second goal and fourth point since joining San Diego three games ago.

In the shootout, San Diego got goals from Pederson, Clayton Read and Kevin Grant. O'Leary and Denis Ladouceur beat Classen.
