Brampton Steelheads News Release

Peterborough, ON - Leif Hertz made his first OHL start as the Steelheads visited the Peterborough Petes Thursday afternoon. Coming off a 6-3 home loss to the Niagara IceDogs, the Steelheads were looking to get back in the win column and extend their winning streak on the road to 5.

Peterborough's Josh MacDonald would open the scoring, sneaking one past Hertz to give the Petes an early lead. Josh Burnside would respond for the Steelheads a few minutes later, beating Wells off a pass from Babintsev. McLeod drew the other assist on Burnside's 11th of the season. Austin Gerhart would get his first goal of the season at 6:15 to give the Steelheads a 2-1 lead. Keeping up the pressure, Bobby MacIntyre created a good chance, but his teammate was tied up and unable to finish it off as the puck trickled through the blue ice. Down by a goal, Peterborough picked up the pace near the mid-way point of the period, netting two quick goals to regain their lead. Betzold picked up the first, and MacDonald got his second of the game less than a minute later to put the Petes up 3-2. Cameron Zanussi would then enter the game to relieve Hertz. Sam Babintsev picked off a Peterborough pass and had a good chance to tie things up as he beat Wells, but unfortunately not the post. Michael Clarke beat Zanussi off a shot from just inside the blue line to give the Petes a 4-2 cushion heading into the first intermission.

The Petes started the second similar to the first, testing the Trout early on. Zanussi stood tall on a 3 on 2, denying Lorentz on the opportunity. MacIntyre created another good chance, feeding a nice pass to Cianfrone who was hauled down with no call on the play. The Steelheads had back-to-back power play opportunities, but could not capitalize on the man-advantage. Peterborough had their first power play opportunity at 11:01 as Devlin would serve 2 minutes for an interference penalty. The Trout maintained good coverage on the penalty kill, dumping the puck as the Devlin's penalty expired. Right as Devlin came out of the box, the Petes fumbled the puck in their own zone. Devlin picked up the loose puck to give himself a breakaway opportunity; and he made no mistake, beating Wells top shelf to bring the Steelheads within one heading into the second intermission.

The teams would get an extended break early in the third frame as a check into the boards caused the glass to break. After approximately 17 minutes, and a quick skate for the players to stretch their legs, the game resumed. The Steelheads were struck with some bad luck late in the period, as Stefan LeBlanc would head to the box for a slashing penalty. The Petes were unable to capitalize with the man-advantage as things returned to even strength with just over 3 minutes to go. With time winding down, Cameron Zanussi would head to the bench in favour of an extra attacker. An icing call would send things back to the Steelheads zone, and Zanussi back to the net. Peterborough took a hooking penalty off the face-off, allowing the Steelheads 2 extra skaters with 18 seconds to go. Mississauga gained possession and capitalized on the power play as Babintsev beat Wells to tie the game at 19:48 and send it in to overtime.

Both teams took penalties in the extra frame, but neither could find the back of the net. A shootout would be necessary to determine a winner in this one. After scoring the game-tying goal, Babintsev would be up first for the Steelheads. He was able to beat Wells again, but he would be the only one to do so. Zanussi stopped MacDonald and Garlent, but Betzold and Comel both scored in the shootout as the Petes edged the Trout 5-4.

The Mississauga Steelheads return home to the Hershey Centre tomorrow to host Dylan Strome and the Erie Otters at 7:30 pm. Friday's game is presented by 401 Dixie Kia, and great tickets are still available online through Ticketmaster and at the Hershey Centre box office.
