Brampton Steelheads News Release
Oshawa, ON - The Steelheads travelled to Oshawa Wednesday evening, earning another hard-fought two points in a 5-4 victory over their Eastern Conference rivals, the Oshawa Generals. Nathan Bastian tied the score with two seconds remaining in regulation, setting the stage for Everett Clark's overtime winner. The Steelheads now lead the fifth place Niargara and Peterborough by two points, giving them a boost in their pursuit of home ice advantage in the first round of the OHL playoffs. The Steelheads welcomed back defenceman, Jared Walsh to the lineup for the first time since November 1st. Daniel Muzito-Bagenda continued his solid month of February with a goal and two assists, including the opening goal of the game, while Mason Marchment also had a goal and two assists on the night.
It was a close defensive game in the first with a number of good chances at both ends. Muzito-Bagenda opened the scoring at 10:37, tossing a backhand that beat Jeremy Brodeur. Mason Marchment and Austin Osmanski assisted on DMB's 18th of the season and eighth in nine games. The Generals answered back with a power play goal from Anthony Cirelli to lock the game up a 1-1 after 20 minutes of play.
Mississauga came out with a glorious chance to regain their lead early in the second, but Brodeur made a key save to keep the score even. Approaching the midway point of the frame, Daniel Robertson found Alexandre Renaud, who came down the left side of the Mississauga zone before firing the puck past Flinn for the go-ahead goal. Minutes later, Ryan McLeod picked up a rebound and lifted a backhander over the glove of Brodeur to even the score at 2-2. Stefan LeBlanc and Jason Smith recorded the assists on McLeod's seventh of the season. The Steelheads would regain their lead at 15:52 as Mason Marchment danced around Oshawa's defense, notching his 17th of the season to put Mississauga up 3-2. Mississauga's lead was short-lived as the Gens capitalized on an awkward bounce off the boards just 22 seconds later. The Generals added one more from Kenny Huether before time ran out in the frame, giving them a 4-3 lead heading into the second intermission.
With 2:19 remaining in the game, the Steelheads pulled Flinn in favour of an extra attacker. Mississauga would tie the game with two seconds remaining as Nathan Bastian tipped a shot in front of the net to send the game into overtime. Marchment and Nicolas Hague picked up the assist on the buzzer beater.
As always, the 3-on-3-overtime period was filled with exciting chances at both ends. With 15 seconds remaining in extra time, Everett Clark tipped a shot in close that beat Brodeur to end the game. Muzito-Bagenda and Sean Day picked up the assists on the winning goal. The Steelheads are home on Friday to host the Owen Sound Attack at the Hershey Centre for a 7:30 pm start.
