Saginaw Spirit News Release
SAGINAW, MI - On Thursday, Saginaw Spirit General Manager Dave Drinkill announced that former Detroit Red Wings coach Dave Lewis would be joining the hockey club for the remainder of the season as a Defensive Consultant.
Lewis, 62, spent 15 seasons in the NHL with the New York Islanders, Los Angeles Kings, New Jersey Devils, and Detroit Red Wings. After 1,000+ games in the NHL, Lewis was added to the Detroit Red Wings coaching staff in 1988. Lewis won three Stanley Cups with the Red Wings as an Associate Coach in 1997, 1998, and 2002. Lewis was named head coach of the Red Wings in 2003 after the retirement of Scotty Bowman. Stops in Boston and Carolina led Lewis to his current position of head coach of the Belarusian National Team.
Saginaw Spirit GM Dave Drinkill said, "As an organization we are thrilled to add someone with the experience and expertise that Dave Lewis can bring to the Saginaw Spirit. As the team's new defensive consultant, he will work closely with our coaching staff for the rest of the season, ensuring that our players will maximize the skills they have and help take their game to another level."
"I would like to thank Craig Goslin and Dave Drinkill for this opportunity to mold the hockey minds of these young defensemen," said the three-time Stanley Cup Champion, Lewis. "Now that the timing is right for everyone, it's a great opportunity to come in and help out. The Spirit could have the next Nicklas Lidstrom on their roster right now. That is what I am here to find out."
The Spirit hit the road this weekend facing Erie on Saturday and Hamilton on Sunday afternoon. Listen to the voices of Spirit hockey Joey Battaino and Dennis Desrosiers have the call all season long on FM Talk and Sports 100.5 FM.
