Steelheads Extend Point Streak with Win over Frontenacs

The Mississauga Steelheads defeated the Kingston Frontenacs as Alan Lyszczarczyk scored the game-winner in the second period and the Trout limited the Frontenacs to only 14 shots on the night. One goal each in the third period by Keean Washkurak and James Hardie would secure the 4-1 victory on Friday night at the Leon's Centre.

Friday night's first period at the Leon's Centre was a tight-lipped affair, CJ Clarke was the only player able to break the deadlock. The former Peterborough Pete and Flint Firebird scored his ninth of the season and third since joining the Steelheads just prior to the trade deadline. The Mississauga, ON native worked his way to the front of the net and lifted a backhand shot up and over the left shoulder of Brandon Bonello. The remainder of the first period went to plan for the Trout; Joe Ranger stopped all seven shots he faced in the opening frame. A late double-minor for high-sticking to Thomas Harley meant the Steelheads would begin the second with 3:52 of 5-on-4 time to kill.

The Steelheads penalty kill did their job to start the frame, but a stroke of luck helped Jakob Brahaney get to a puck in a dangerous spot and his wrister snuck by Ranger to tie the score at one. The goal was Brahaney's fifth of the year and first-ever goal against the Steelheads. The Steelheads penalty kill would then have to go back to work for their third and final time of the night to kill off a Ryan Barbosa tripping call. The unit was successful and wrapped up a perfect 3 for 3 night including the double minor to Harley. The Steelheads would be rewarded for their tight-checking later on. A dogged forecheck would lead to a giveaway by Lucas Rowe at the side of the net that Alan Lyszcarczyk pounced on for his 29th of the season. James Richmond's team allowed only 13 shots through two periods.

The final period was when the Steelheads showed off some offensive prowess, 18 shots in the period resulted in two goals for the Trout. The first marker came eight minutes into the period on Keean Washkurak's 12th of the season. A period of sustained pressure was finally rewarded when Alan Lyszcarczyk directed Cole Carter's missed shot towards the front of the net and the puck happened upon Washkurak's stick who promptly tucked the puck into the back of the net. The second goal of the period came off the stick of rookie James Hardie, both he and Cole Schwindt combined nicely crisscrossing their way into the offensive zone. Schwindt would feed Hardie who created just enough room for himself to get a hard shot on goal that beat Bonello and gave the Steelheads a three-goal lead late in the period. The goal erased any fears left over from the two-goal lead that evaporated on the Trout Wednesday night in Hamilton.

Some notes from the game: James Hardie's goal tonight marked the second instance in his career that he has scored in consecutive games. Cole Carter's third period assist moves him three away from 100 on his OHL career. Alan Lyszczarczyk's goal moves him just one away from his first 30-goal campaign in the OHL. Keean Washkurak's third period goal extends his point streak to three games, which ties the longest of his career and is the longest active streak on the team. The Steelheads PK's perfect night moves them to 80.2% on the year good for seventh in the OHL, and the Steelheads would limit the Kingston Frontenacs to a single shot in the third period.

The Steelheads will return to action on Sunday at 2:00 pm as the team plays the North Bay Battalion in a pivotal Central Division clash at the North Bay Memorial Gardens.
