Brampton Steelheads News Release

MILTON, ON -- The Steelheads hosted the Guelph Storm in Milton tonight for their first home pre-season game in front of an energetic group of fans eager to get a sneak peek of what to expect for the coming season. Looking to sweep the home and home series, the Steelheads were quick to generate chances. Unfortunately for the Trout, it was the Storm that found the back of the net first as Bertuzzi capitalized on a rebound off a shot from Baltisberger.

Looking to bounce back from the Storm's opening goal, the Steelheads energy got the best of them resulting in back-to-back penalties to Clark and DiTomaso respectively. The Storm were able to take advantage with the extra man as Leslie put one past Carty as the first penalty expired. Harpur drew the lone assist on Leslie's goal that would put the Storm up by two midway through the first. Not long after, the Steelheads found themselves on the defensive again as Bastian drew a hooking penalty with just over eight minutes left in the period. Despite a few good chances for the Storm, Carty stood tall this time around as the Steelheads killed off the first of three penalties that period. Mississauga native Michael McLeod had the best chance for the Trout but rang his shot off the post before heading into the first intermission.

Things started to heat up mid-way through the second as Guelph took back-to-back penalties, Auger for slashing and Harpur for cross-checking, resulting in a two minute 5-on-3 for the Trout. Maintaining the zone, the Steelheads had a number of great chances but couldn't find the back of the net. Shots were 17-12 in favour of Guelph after they killed off the 5-on-3. Shortly after, Graves and Rapp dropped the gloves, sending them both to their respective dressing rooms. Rapp also received an additional penalty for removing Graves' helmet, putting the Steelheads on their second power play of the period. As Rapp's penalty expired the Storm mustered some momentum as Auger tipped a nice pass from Leslie past Carty to put them up 3-0. With time winding down in the period, tension boiled over again as a second scrum broke out that would send the Steelheads on the power play yet again. Without wasting any time, it would be LeBlanc who put the Steelheads on the board with a buzzer beater goal to close out the second; Venuto and Cianfrone drew the assists on LeBlanc's goal.

Craivevich came out ready to respond, netting a goal 1:15 into the period to put the Storm up 4-1 early in the third. The Steelheads were given an opportunity to cut the Storm's lead as Harpur and Bertuzzi took back to back penalties, putting the Steelheads on a 5-on-3 for the second time in the game. Venuto had a great chance but was shut down by a showstopper save from Nichols. Trailing by three with time winding down, the Steelheads looked for chances and Sean Day would be the one to deliver. He awed the crowd with an effortless rush that he finished off with a beautiful wrist shot over Nichols' shoulder. LeBlanc and Carty drew the assists on Day's goal that pulled the Steelheads within two. It didn't take long for the Storm to answer back though as Stevens stripped the puck and scored a breakaway goal on Carty to extend their lead to 5-2. Despite another 5-on-3 opportunity, the Steelheads couldn't get through the Storm, ending the home and home series at one a piece.

The Steelheads would like to give a big thank you to the Milton Minor Hockey Association for hosting us tonight! Pre-season action continues on Sunday, September 7th at Vic Johnston Arena as the Steelheads host the Kitchener Rangers for a 2:00 pm start. Tickets will be available on location prior to the game for $5.00.
