Spirit Earn First Preseason Win at Home Against Plymouth

The Saginaw Spirit returned to the Dow Event Center for the first time in the 2014-15 season, and recorded their first exhibition win with a 5-3 decision over the Plymouth Whalers.

The Whalers opened the scoring at the 10:14 mark of the first period on a goal by Liam Dunda. Assists went to Alex Di Carlo and Connor Sills. The Spirit retailiated shortly after on a goal by San Jose draft pick Dylan Sadowy, who converted a nifty pass by Kris Bennett, with a second asssist going to Connor Brown at 10:52. Shots on goal after the first were Saginaw 8 and Plymouth 6.

Once again the teams traded goals in short order in the second period as the Spirit got a goal off the stick of first year forward Adam McPhail at 7:22, with assists by Michael Holmes and first round pick Tye Felhaber. The Whalers responded at 9:08 of the middle period when Bryce Yetman beat Spirit starting goaltender David Ovsjannikov. Assists on the play went to Whalers defensemen Tyler Sensky and Alex Peters. The Spirit regained the lead at 11:11 of the period on a nice effort by Connor Brown, while shorthanded to pull the Spirit ahead 3-2. The Spirit scored the final goal of the second period to take a two goal advantage after 40 minutes as Mitchell Stephens beat Plymouth goaltender Tyler Johnson at 18:06, with the lone assist going to Jake Ringuette. Shots on goal in the second period were 15 by the Spirit and 13 by the Whalers.

The game did not see another goal until the midway point of the third period when verteran Mathew Campagna connected on the powerplay at 10:09 for the Whalers. Assists on the play went to Sonny Milano and Gianluca Curcuruto. Mitchell Stephens gave the Spirit a two goal cushion once again at 17:07 of the third with assists going to linemates Nick Moutrey and Jimmy Lodge. The final score read Saginaw 5, Plymouth 3 as the Spirit evened their preseason record at 1-1. Final shots on goal Saginaw 30 and Pymouth 29.

The same two teams will play in Plymouth tomorrow night at 7:05. The next home game for the Spirit will be on Friday, September 12th as they play host to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
