Brampton Steelheads News Release
NASHVILLE, TN - It was an exciting day for the Mississauga Steelheads at the 2023 NHL Draft in Nashville. With the 189th pick in the draft, the Dallas Stars selected centreman Angus MacDonell in the sixth round. With this selection, the Toronto native becomes the second Steelhead in franchise history to join the Dallas Stars after Thomas Harley.
Placing fourth on the Steelheads in scoring, MacDonell tallied 41 points (29G, 12A) over the course of the 2022-23 season. The 5'10", 172lb forward was acquired from the Sarnia Sting at the trade deadline as a part of the trade for Luca Del Bel Belluz.
MacDonell started the season with 17 points (12G, 5A) during his time in Sarnia before significantly upping his production upon his arrival in Mississauga. In the month of February alone, the centreman tallied nine goals and three assists, including three power play goals. His 29 goals placed him second on the Steelheads in that category. In the postseason series against the North Bay Battalion, MacDonell continued to impress with 5 points (3G, 2A) in six games, including a shorthanded goal, making him the first player in the OHL to score a shorthanded goal in the playoffs this year. He also is one of four players to ever score a shorthanded goal in the playoffs for the Steelheads.
Following the playoffs, MacDonell impressed at the IIHF U18 Championships for Team Canada. The centreman put up 5 points (1G, 4A) throughout the course of the tournament. The Steelhead turned the heads of NHL scouts, placing 172nd in the midterm Central Scouting rankings before moving up 30 spots in the final standings.
Since the team's inception in 2012, the Steelheads have had at least one player selected in the NHL Draft each year.
