Steelheads Add 2 Prospects in U18 Draft

MISSISSAUGA, ON - The U18 Priority Selection was held at noon today and Steelheads General Manager and Head Coach, James Richmond and his staff added a defenceman and a forward with their picks in the 5th annual U18 Priority Selection. As per the rules of the draft, when a goaltender is not selected within the first two rounds, the Steelheads forwent their third round pick. Richmond had this to say about the additions, "We were able to select two quality players which will make the competition in our 2021-22 Training Camp even more interesting."

In the first round, the Steelheads selected 5'11, 165 lbs, Tyler Wells of the Mississauga Rebels; a left shot defenceman who posted 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists) in 32 games during the 2019-20 campaign. Steelheads fans may recognize the last name of the 19th overall selection as Tyler is the younger brother of Steelheads alumni Ryan Wells who played for the club from 2017-2019.

In round two, the Steelheads drafted left winger; Kenny Belanger. The 6'2, 175lbs forward registered 5 points (1 goal, 4 assists) in 27 games with the Toronto Marlboros in the 2019-20 season. He is also the son of former NHLer Kenny Belanger Sr. who played 248 NHL games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Islanders, Boston Bruins and LA Kings.

The Steelheads Head Coach and GM adds, "We would like congratulate both of our U18 Draft picks and welcome them to the Steelheads family. We look forward to getting back to the rink and kicking off training camp in the coming months."
