Magera nets game-winning goal in third period

DUBUQUE, IOWA - Austin Magera scored midway through the third period to break a 2-2 tie and give the Steel their first lead of the night as Chicago (8-2-0-1, 17 pts.) defeated the Dubuque Fighting Saints (4-4-1-0, 9 pts.) 3-2 Friday at Mystique Community Ice Center. Samuel Bucek and Baker Shore added goals for the Steel.

Both teams traded chances in a tightly-contested first period, including a backhanded chance from Steel forward Robert Mastrosimone that was narrowly denied by Fighting Saints netminder Jaxon Castor. The Steel gave up the opening goal for just the second time this season when Cole Guttman recorded a power play goal off a wrist shot from just below the right circle with 13.3 seconds remaining in the first period.

The Steel evened the score with a power play goal of their own at the 7:55 mark of the second period. Defenseman Robbie Stucker's shot from the right point was cashed in by teammate Bucek for the Slovakian's seventh point in the last seven games.

Dubuque regained the lead three minutes later when Guttman notched his second power play goal of the night, this time form the bottom of the left circle, beating Steel netminder Oskar Autio with a wrist shot to the glove side at 10:57.

The Steel battled back and tied the game with 4:40 left in the middle frame. The forward trio of Blake McLaughlin, Baker Shore and Jack Dugan rushed down the ice, leading to the scoring chance. McLaughlin connected a pass to Dugan who set up Shore in the low slot for the Harvard commit's fifth goal of the season. Dugan's assist marked his league leading 17th point of the season.

In the final minute of the second period, Dubuque's Alex Steeves attempted to go blocker-side on a breakaway chance, but Autio shut the door with a huge save to keep things even heading to the third.

At 8:29 of the third period, the Steel grabbed the lead for the first time in the game. Forward C.J. Walker faked a shot in the left circle and spun a pass to Magera in front. Magera fired a shot past Castor's glove to put Chicago up, 3-2.

From there, a strong defensive effort and timely saves from Autio sealed Chicago's third victory in as many tries against Dubuque this season. Autio improved to 8-1-0-0 this season.

Chicago is on the road next weekend for back-to-back games. On Friday, Nov. 17, the Steel face off against Team USA (U17) in Plymouth, Mich., at 6:05 p.m. CT.
