Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-The Sioux Falls Stampede led the Sioux City Musketeers for much of the game Friday night, but Sioux City railed for a late third period goal and then won the game, 2-1, just 1:18 into overtime before 5,775 fans at the PREMIER Center. Antti Virtanen scored the Herd's only goal late in the first period while Mikhail Berdin stopped 26 of 28 shots in goal for the Stampede who are still winless at home (0-2-3) and are 4-4-4 overall on the season. Sioux Falls did collect an important point in the standings by getting to overtime and have collected a point in three of five home games this season.
It was a much quieter first period than last Saturday for the Stampede and they were happy with that. With the game still tied late in the period, the Herd grabbed the first goal when Antti Virtanen wristed a shot from the left point that traveled through traffic and into the upper right-hand corner of the net to give the Stampede a 1-0 edge. The Herd took that lead into the locker room despite being outshot 8-7 in the period.
After a scoreless second period, the game remained a 1-0 lead for the Stampede well into the third period and it appeared the Herd would be on their way to their first home win of the season, but the Musketeers had other plans. After the Stampede nearly made it 2-0, the Musketeers tied the game when Randy Hernandez found a streaking Samuel Salonen down the slot and Salonen was able to wrist the puck past Stampede goaltender Mikhail Berdin to tie the game 1-1. That goal would eventually force overtime despite the Stampede outshooting the Musketeers 13-8 in the third period.
The Stampede had good puck possession to start the overtime, but were unable to get the shot they needed to win the game and the Musketeers would come back with a face-off win that would lead to a goal. Cole Koepke sent a pass to Martin Pospisil to the right of the goal and Pospisil sent a perfect pass right back to Koepke in front of the net who tapped the puck into the net to give the Musketeers the 2-1 come-from-behind victory.
Sioux Falls outshot Sioux City 34-28 on the night and went 0-for-3 on the power play while going 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The Stampede return to action Saturday when they travel down I-29 to Lincoln to face the Stars at the Ice Box. Puck drop is 7:05 PM and fans can catch all the action starting at 6:40 PM with the Splash City Pre-Game Show on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and KELO.com. The game is also available for purchase through HockeyTV.com.
