Steel Hit the Road for Long Weekend of Games

GENEVA, ILLINOIS-The Chicago Steel hit the road this weekend for a full weekend of games featuring matchups Friday and Saturday night and a Sunday matinee.

The Steel (22-10-1-1; 46 pts) start the weekend on the road Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28 for matchups against the Youngstown Phantoms (17-12-3-1; 38 pts) at Covelli Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CT both nights.

Sunday, Jan. 29, the Steel battle USA Hockey NTDP (U17) (17-11-1-2; 37 pts) at USA Hockey Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. CT.

After splitting a pair of home games last weekend, falling 5-4 to the Waterloo Black Hawks Friday and winning 3-2 over the Des Moines Buccaneers Saturday, the Steel will begin a stretch of six of the next seven games away from home.

This Friday and Saturday will be the fifth and sixth of eight scheduled matchups in the regular season against the Youngstown Phantoms and Chicago's first trip to Youngstown this season. The Steel are 4-1 against the Phantoms this season. The Steel have an all time record of 48-40-3-3 when facing the Phantoms, and a record of 25-15-2-2 as the road team.

In their last meeting on Saturday, Nov. 19, the Steel won an overtime thriller to secure a weekend sweep of the Phantoms. Michael Emerson registered the game winning goal and Steel goaltender Jack Stark registered 30 of 31 saves.

Youngstown is led offensively by former Steel forward Andon Cerbone who has 32 points (10G, 22A). Cerbone was acquired on Dec. 6, 2022 from the Omaha Lancers. Cerbone was a member of the Steel each of the past two seasons including Chicago's Clark Cup Championship winning team in 2020-2021. With the Steel, Cerbone registered 7 points (2G, 5A) in 30 games played in 2020-2021, and last season, Cerbone registered 38 points (11G, 27A) in 61 games.

Sunday's meeting between the Steel and the USA Hockey NTDP (U17) will be the third of five scheduled regular season contests between the Steel and U17 team. The teams split the previous two matchups in Plymouth, MI in October. The Steel hold an overall record of 47-30-6-5 against the USA Hockey NTDP, and a record of 22-19-1-3 as the road team.

In their last meeting on Saturday, Oct. 15, the Steel fell 5-4 in a back-and-forth game before USA took a two-goal lead and held off a Chicago final push.

USA is led offensively by Cole Eiserman with 22 points (12G, 10A) in USHL contests. Following Eiserman is James Hagens with 20 points (10G, 10A) in USHL contests. Hagens, brother of Steel defenseman Michael Hagens, registered two goals while Eiserman registered one goal in the last meeting between the two teams.

Next weekend the Steel hit the road to visit Cedar Rapids on Friday, Feb. 3 before returning home on Saturday, Feb. 4 for a Velcro Wallet Giveaway against the RoughRiders. The first 500 fans to arrive at Fox Valley Ice Arena Saturday night will receive a free Steel velcro wallet. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT both nights.
