Chicago Steel News Release

GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Michael Gildon recorded a hat trick in his USHL debut Saturday as Team USA (U17) doubled up the Chicago Steel, 10-5, at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Judd Caufield (1+2) and Jack Hughes (0+3) also recorded three-point outings for Team USA (1-0-0-0, 2 pts.).

The Steel (1-1-0-0, 2 pts.) celebrated their 2017 Clark Cup Championship with a pre-game ring ceremony and banner unveiling in front of 1,204 fans at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Five different players registered goals for Chicago.

The night began with a tribute to the 2017 Clark Cup Championship as eight returning Steel players received their rings at center ice and helped unveil the Eastern Conference and Clark Cup Championship banners. Former players and former head coach Dan Muse delivered video messages to the fans during the festivities.

When the puck dropped, the Steel grabbed an early lead thanks to Robbie Stucker's first USHL goal, beating Team USA's Cameron Rowe over the blocker at 4:34. Team USA responded with three goals in the first period. Drew Helleson tied the game at 8:07, then Gildon recorded his first two goals of the night at 9:37 and 18:31 to give Team USA a 4-1 lead.

A busy second period saw each team score four times. Team USA's Cole Caufield deflected a shot past Steel netminder Justin Robbins 1:54 into the period, before Chicago scored the next three tallies. Austin Magera lit the lamp for a second consecutive night with a 5-on-3 power play goal at 4:20. Samuel Bucek registered his team-leading third goal of the season at 10:06, then, just nine seconds later, Steel tender Robert Mastrosimone notched his first career USHL goal, tying the game, 4-4.

The back-and-forth action continued as Team USA's Judd Caulfield scored and the Steel tied the game again just 48 seconds later when Jack Dugan backhanded the puck into the net for his second goal in as many nights.

The visitors dominated the scoresheet for the remainder of the game. Caufield regained the lead for Team USA at 13:51, and Alex Turcotte made it 7-5 prior to the second intermission.

Matthew Boldy, John Beecher, and Gildon added third-period tallies as Team USA skated to the five-goal win.

The Steel are back in action on Friday, October 13 with a visit to Muskegon to take on the Lumberjacks at L.C. Walker Arena. Faceoff is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. CT. Chicago returns home on Friday, Oct. 20 for Pucks and Pups Night presented by WoofBeach, when the Steel face the Dubuque Fighting Saints at 7:05 p.m.
