Cowbell Cup Kicks off Friday
October 9, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa- The Waterloo Black Hawks were eastern Iowa's top hockey team in 2016/17, outdistancing the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders for the Dupaco Cowbell Cup.
The Hawks' defense of the three-team trophy begins on Friday in Dubuque. Waterloo will meet the Fighting Saints in the first game which will contribute to this season's Dupaco Cowbell Cup standings.
"Supporting community organizations and bringing value to our members are both important Dupaco initiatives," said Joe Hearn, President and CEO, Dupaco Community Credit Union. "We're excited to ring in the hockey season by partnering with the Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, and Waterloo teams of the USHL as the presenting sponsor of the Cowbell Cup series! This partnership allows us to help provide excellent family-friendly events as well as to share our cooperative message."
Points for the Dupaco Cowbell Cup will be awarded solely from head-to-head games between the Black Hawks, RoughRiders, and Fighting Saints: two for a win and one for an overtime or shootout loss. Due to an uneven number of games between the teams this season, the following matchups will NOT count toward the standings: October 14th (Dubuque at Waterloo), December 1st (Cedar Rapids at Dubuque), and December 9th (Dubuque at Cedar Rapids). As a result, each team will participate in 12 games which will determine the winner.
Dupaco has been the presenting sponsor of the Cowbell Cup since 2015/16. Dupaco Community Credit Union is a full-service, member-owned financial cooperative. With offices located in Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Dubuque, and Cedar Rapids, Dupaco helps to improve the financial lives of its more than 100,000 member-owners while making a positive difference in the communities it serves.
The Black Hawks have claimed the Cowbell Cup twice, last season and in 2013/14. The complete schedule of games which will count toward the series standings is detailed on the following page:

Founded in 1962, the Waterloo Black Hawks are the oldest team in the United States Hockey League, the only Tier 1 junior league in the country. Tier I junior status attracts the top college-bound players, because it provides the broadest on-ice, academic, and social support while still allowing elite players to maintain NCAA eligibility. Professional hockey has also taken notice of Waterloo as a quality place for talent to develop; since 2003, 46 Black Hawks have been selected by National Hockey League teams.
