Sioux Falls, SD-The Waterloo Black Hawks scored three times in the final period and spoiled the Stampede's home opener on Saturday night, topping the Herd 4-2, despite 8,615 roaring fans at the PREMIER Center. Corson Green and Nolan Walker each scored for the Herd who tied the game 2-2 just over five minutes into the third period. Mikhail Berdin stopped 37 shots in goal for the Stampede who are 1-1-0 on the season.

The start of the game is what you would expect for a home opener with a lot of back-and-forth play as the teams tried to settle into a rhythm. It would stay scoreless until the 16:38 mark when Corson Green tallied his first goal as a member of the Stampede. The Clark Cup champion blasted a shot from the right point, through traffic and past Waterloo netminder Matej Tomek to give the Herd a 1-0 lead. Waterloo would get into penalty trouble late, putting the Herd on a 5-on-3 advantage heading into the second period. The Stampede outshot the Hawks 10-7 in the period.

The Herd were unable to convert on the power play, but still held a 1-0 lead until the 8:16 mark when the Black Hawks got on the board off the stick of Ben Copeland who raced into the left circle and wristed a shot through the five-hole of Mikhail Berdin to make it a 1-1 game. That would be the only goal of the period as the game entered the final period in a 1-1 deadlock.

The Black Hawks entered the third on a power play and took only 12 seconds to convert as Jackson Cates took the opening draw down the rightwing boards and lifted as shot over the left shoulder of Berdin for a 2-1 lead. Sioux Falls would respond with a power play goal of their own at 5:45 when Colin Swoyer found Nolan Walker open inside the right circle and Walker wristed a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net to make it a 2-2 game. Less than four minutes later the Hawks would take the lead for good after a shot by Bobby Trivigno was stopped by Berdin, but the puck squirted loose in front of the net for Garrett Wait who knocked it home for a 3-2 lead.

The Stampede pulled Berdin with just over a minute remaining to try and tie the game, but the Herd couldn't control their passes and Garrett Klee skated in and scored on an empty net to secure a 4-2 win for the Black Hawks.

Waterloo outshot the Herd 41-25 on the night and went 1-for-6 on the power play while the Stampede were 1-for-7.

Sioux Falls returns to action next Friday when they travel to Ralston Arena to face the Omaha Lancers at 7:05 PM. Fans can catch the game live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and KELO.com starting at 6:40 PM. The Herd return home on Friday, October 20th to host the Des Moines Buccaneers at 7:05 PM.
